Okay, I know this is early, but I have to start early to get done on time.  In the past we use to get advent calendars from Dumb Ox, but seeing how they are not around now I wonder if anyone had resources for an advent calendar that is traditional for children.

www.catholicsupply.com has pages of them. we were fortunate enough to shop in person last year and the ones we bought were very nice.

We bought beautiful Advent calendars from the National Gallery of Art one year and the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC. They had very ornate doors to open each day with lovely prints of the Blessed Mother or another scene from the Bible relating to the Nativity behind each. On the back was listed the name of the print, the date, the artist, and which museum the print was housed in. I just loved them. Maybe a museum nearby where you live would have one to choose from?
I should get mine now, good idea, I'm always frantically trying to order one / find one around the Feast of Christ the King. That and Advent candles!

Thank you ladies, I will be checking the internet soon to look thru your ideas. I was at a catholic bookstore last weekend and bought my St. Nicholas day gifts. So I am in the mode to get things done. Now if I just don't forget where I put them.  I am trying to find my box of advent books.....  ....and I can't seem to locate them so later this afternoon I will pray to St. Anthony and try again. Thanks again,

A few years ago my husband bought a gorgeous Advent Calendar that depicted The Annunciation Triptych by Robert Campin into an Advent Calendar. here's a picture, but it's not available right now.
But Someone wants to me find more copies, because I happened to find the calendar yesterday in some unrelated activity. It was the lone item that didn't make it to the Advent box.
This was designed by Berthe Amoss, whose website shows all sorts of beautiful works and more calendars. The press used to be called "More than a Card" but now is Cocodrie Press. Phone number 800-635-9672. This is based in New Orleans...and considering how we just passed the anniversary of Katrina, I find this very interesting.
Anyway, there are some Annunication calendars available from 2004, I believe, retail price $11.00. There might be others. I think she designs them for the National Gallery of Art, which is what the lady told me on the phone.
I'm just really interested in this author illustrator, now. Cay, have you seen or heard of her?

Here is something different: 
I very physical, hands-on one! I bought it only recently and on each day, you open the little door and there is a small space to put something (I don't know what, I'll start another thread to ask what! )
I bought it in Australia but like all things, it probably came from the US originally.

I ordered this one for this year, so I haven't tried it yet with the kids. It looks nice, and being 3-dimensional, is different from the ones we've done in the past. Check it out at http://www.ltp.org. It's called "Fling Wide the Doors: An Advent and Christmastime Calendar" (Family size).
(Their server seems to be down right now so I couldn't give you a direct link. I also got my liturgical year calendar from them.)

Something we do here, is rather than Advent calenders which can get expensive with each child wanting their own to open.. and my annoyance with "count down december" calenders instead of true Advent calenders.. anyway..
We make pink and purple paper chains.. each child makes one and they get to take off a link every night of Advent and the last link comes down on Christmas Eve day while we're decorating the house for Christmas.
I'm hoping to incorporate this year the Bible readings for the Jesse tree. We have such limited space that I don't think we can also do an actual tree but I thought putting the readings on the paper chains for the kids who are reading so they can look up and read the passages would be good.
A side benefit is that all that purple and pink in my living room gives a very different feel to the room during Advent and then the Christmas decorations are a large contrast as well.

I agree about the calendar count down can get a little out of hand. We do something like the chains here. We go ahead and put up are tree at the begining of Advent. We place white lights on it,then we tie purple bows on the branches enough for each child who wants to do this I only have my 2 younger daughters anymore who still do this. Then everyday they untie a bow off the tree, we do the readings for our Jesse tree ornaments and one of them places it on the tree. What I liked about the Dumb Ox calendars was that it was religious based with readings and prayers also inexpensive and each could have their own. Some of them involved coloring parts of the nativity picture each day, but they just left a impression on my children. I also enjoyed the adult ones, many years ago it was their calendars for adults that introduce me to the Christmas Novena. And off the topic they also have calendars for the month of May that were beautiful they were such a wonderful resource to use for celebrating the month of Mary. I just wish another company carried the products that Dumb Ox use to offer. Though some of the sights these ladies have recommended have some wonderful looking calendars, guess I will need to make up my mind soon.

We do the chain thing too, though we've used red and green. I think we'll use red and green and white this year maybe??? Or maybe blue and white or purple and white and pink? I don't know. We'll probably just stick with tradition.
Anyway, I write different things on them for us to do for example:
*Pray for the men and women in our military and their families who are away from each other this season.
*Pray for those who've lost loved ones and for whom this Christmas will be very difficult.
*Pray for those who are struggling financially at this time of year
*Say the Prayer to St. Joseph for Daddy
*Recite the Magnificat and thank Mary for saying YES!
*Sing the first verse together of *Oh Come, O Come Emmanuel*
*Say the Divine Mercy Chaplet for peace in the world.
Those are just examples. They get a piece of candy with the ring they take off each day. (We have one family ring, and the kids take turns, or now let their little sister do it). I buy special *little Christmas candies (kisses, snickers, etc.).
Then on several days spaced evenly throughout, one of the rings says, *Get a Little Gift*, which I've wrapped, and have ready before Advent begins(hopefully  ). They love those days!
On December 24th, it always says, WELCOME BABY JESUS! And on it, it says, *Get your FIRST Christmas present from Mom!* Their first Christmas present is always new pajamas and slippers (if they need them), and a small gift.
We love our tradition, so we'll stick with it. But some of those calendars do look dreamy! 
We also have a felt Christmas tree banner with pockets with a felt ornament with velcro that we put on the tree each day for Advent. Day 24 always has the ANGEL ornament, which we put on top.
