Does anyone get the saint of the day emails from AmericanCatholic.org? What do you think of them? I ask because sometimes they make me a little uncomfortable and I don't know if it's because they are just more liberal than I, or if I'm just really lacking in information regarding the Catholic Faith...probably both . For instance, in today's post, about the Assumption, the author says (this is not a direct quote) since Mary represents all the people of the old and new testament, the Assumption is the exemplification of the woman's victory. Now what does that mean? What woman's victory? Mary's victory through Jesus? Woman's victory from a feministic point of view? I just don't know. Am I just really dumb or what? I am hoping for your comments / explanations. Thanks!
Becky

Becky, I looked up that site on the Catholic Culture site which reviews the content of Catholic websites. It came up as a red, or dangerous site.
Here's the link
Hope this helps.

Becky,
I am signed up for the mailings. You are right, it's a mixed bag. I've been behind the scenes of Catholic Culture trying to do the review. There is a lot of good stuff, but their publications (magazine) and some other items have some liberal tendencies. CC went back and forth how to evaluate, as a while ago the website was fine, but their publications weren't, but Catholic Culture's job was to evaluate the website, not the books, so what to do. But you can see how they came to this conclusion.
I woud agree with you that the "woman's victory" thing is just annoying and feminist sounding. If it meant "Woman" as in the Genesis account "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel" then you can see the "triumph" of Woman.
I still sign up for the emails, but I do have to filter through some of the information. For some reason my Assumption didn't come yet, so I don't have it to look it over and discuss.
FWIW, I always use caution when someone calls themself "American Catholic" -- publication or person. We're not. We're Roman Catholic.

See and I don't even like that term. I'm a Catholic of the Latin rite and I have several friends who are of the Eastern rites and believe the same things I do.
And Jenn I know you already know that, it's just a pet peeve of mine that most likely comes from the fact that my evangelical sister likes to call me "Roman" Catholic with a sneer because to her the "Catholic" church is something different.

I'm operating with a bit of a headache, so maybe I'll come back later and understand. I guess I don't like the title "American Catholic" -- we're Catholic. But I thought we all belonged to what is termed as the Roman Catholic Church, those following the Western Rite. Does that mean it's supposed to be Latin Rite?
My point is that it isn't what our origin is, we're not French, Spanish, Latin American, German Catholics.
Besides just saying "Catholic" what term is correct.

To be clear I do not like the term American Catholic either. But, while it isn't wrong to call oneself "Roman" Catholic (I've heard Scott Hahn use the term ) it isn't an offical title of the Church either (as I have heard Fr. Fessio point out). If you need more info. I can send it later but I'm running out the door to the grocery store right now.
God bless!

One more thing. If your thought is that we are all under the Bishop of Rome and thus Roman Catholic yes I can see what you are saying BUT when people use the term Roman Catholic that's not generally the meaning, it's generally the meaning of those who follow the rite of Rome (which at this time is Latin). It would not be proper to call an Eastern Rite Catholic- Roman Catholic. Clear as mud??
God bless,

Yes, I knew all that. I guess what was throwing me was the use of "Latin-Rite" which we are, but it didn't ring a bell. I know that Eastern Rite don't call themselves Roman Catholic.
I guess I didn't think that Roman Catholic was incorrect. I see that title in front of churches everywhere.

Jenn, I have to agree. Of course I am a Catholic that lives in America, but sometimes the term seems to mean a disconnect from the Catholic church, such as when someone says how many American Catholics use artificial birth control or something along those lines. Sometimes that term can be a red flag.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's incorrect and you are right a lot of churches use it in their title (as does our diocese here) - it's just that it isn't an "official" title and it bugs me personally because of where it came from (it started as a slam against us during the reformation because those who broke away still considered themselves "Catholic" and we were the "Roman" Catholics who followed the pope - meaning that they were the true Catholics and we weren't) and what it still means to many Protestants today who consider themselves Catholic but not in the same way we would. Again my sister uses it as a putdown with me (nice isn't she? ). Like I said it's not "wrong" it's just a bit of a misnomer and a personal pet-peeve of mine. I'm sorry if I caused confusion by even bringing it up.
God bless!
