Testing out the new forum.
Tim has the Mosaic forum up and running.
Being a visual person...especially one who advocates a picture book education... I love bright colors in my books. That was a particular in the printing of Catholic Mosaic. We wanted to offer the customer color and beauty. And so we did.
We debated about the affordability of a colored version but decided to test the waters. The first colored printing sold very well.
Hillside Education then brought some b & w copies of Catholic Mosaic to a conference this past weekend just to see how they would fare. They sold out.
My question is: which would you prefer? does it really matter?
Colored version?
Black and White version?
The colored version makes the product so much more appealing...and expensive. The b & w version makes the product so much more affordable...thus accessible. We want to make this accessible to Catholic families. Is the color inside the book important to you? Is it worth the extra $$$ ?
If there is a large enough demand, Hillside Education will look into a b & w printing.
Please share your thoughts and opinions here.

I love color. One of the things I don't like about Lingua Mater, Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons is the pictures are not printed in color. Color is definitevely more appealing to me.
In a case of a resource book like yours, lack of color wouldn't stop me from buying. When the context is as good as yours, I can do without color if that is the only way I could get the book.

I feel colour is always best - your reputation with this book obviously preceeds you Cay, and so black and white copies would be snapped up due to that fact but I feel for anyone who 'stumbles' upon this gem without knowing anything about it, colour is always more persuasive and attractive (I'm not trying to suggest we all impulse buy....but the truth is I have made great decisions in this area of buying due to it! )
I just feel colour is the ultimate and this book is the gateway to a number of high quality books and I feel that the 'colour cost' is a good investment for us all and it links it then to those high quality, very colourful picture books.

I agree with Natalia. In this case, b&w doesn't take away from the content. IMO, it does with Lingua Mater and Stories with a View. What is the price difference for retail?

Hmmm . . . I think all the pictures that go with lessons in Lingua Mater are in color. There is some clipart that is black and white. Sorry if it wasn't enough. Stories With a View is all color (except the clipart)
I wasn't able to find all the pictures for Primary LL in color, so I wasn't able to make all of them color. I added as much as I could without the price going through the roof. Haven't done Intermediate LL yet
To answer Elizabeth, price difference is huge. The black and white version would be $24.99 and the color will only be at $38.95 for a short while longer. (Then I'm afaid it must go up.)
So you can see why we ask this question - color or make it more accessible to a greater number of people.
Or, is it accessible enough at the price it is in color?
Thanks for all your input
Margot

I really like my color version! That said, though, I know I a lot of moms who find the price for Catholic Mosaic (color) to be prohibitive. They'd love to have a copy, but at $40 can't afford it. As Elizabeth mentioned, I don't believe that lack of color would at all compromise the content, especially since the Catholic Mosaic book itself is used mainly by parents and the children will be seeing the actual picture book in full color. For example, looking at the chapter for "My Guardian Dear," there is a black and white picture of the book's cover. It's not as pretty as some of the other pictures, such as the previous chapter's picture for "Angel in the Waters," but the content is still wonderful.
Enough chattering, though, bottom line for me, I would lean more towards a black and white version to make it more affordable. The extra $ could be put toward the purchase of some of the books on the booklist that only a library in my dreams would carry.
Just my opinion...
God bless,
Christine

I think I have been hasty - I now recall one lady in Australia sharing the same concerns about price and whether they would be able to afford it - I do understand what others have said in the posting already - and I suppose my ideas about colour are self defeating if ultimately they do not end up in more Catholic mum's hands if price really is a serious issue.
I too would be happy to forgo the colour if colour was not going to be that ultimate draw card but price would, thus allowing more children to enjoy it's benefits

I picked up my copy this past weekend and I love it! As for color v. black and white, I agree that the color isn't really necessary and like Christine said, you can buy a book or two from the booklist with the savings.

I think the savings is pretty significant with the b&w version, and the book would be accessible to many more families with a lower price. And, Christine's point about the kids seeing the actual book is so true!

Cay, much as I would love a colour version, B&W would make it more affordable for me - especially as I can't get the books through the library here. Is offering both options viable?

I don't think anyone would deny that color is preferable. It just is much more eye-catching and engaging, but not always necessary. I was initially a bit taken aback by the price when I first saw it, but will get it anyway at our upcoming conference. But that is because I really want it and know about it by reputation and good press here. I think the price really could be a detractor for many homeschoolers who are just looking. There is a significant difference in the two prices and a $25 version would probably end up in a lot more homes.

I had a talk with my publisher last week about how Amazon is killing us all--publishers are being forced to drive up prices because Amazon discounts so deeply. Without going into the cruelties of publishing, I do feel Margot's pain. That said, I think we have to look carefully at an opportunity to offer a valuable resource without compromising quality. In the case of Catholic Mosaic, it would be nice if every home could have one, but $40 or more is a huge chunk of some people's budget and when it comes to this or math, they're forced to pick math every time. If you can lower your costs and then lower the price, all the better.
And Margot, sorry I didn't check on color in Lingua Mater. I've loaned it to some potentail purchasers (not mine, they'll buy a new one:-)

I think the b & w option is a good one. I love color too but I know from the business end of it how much color drives up the price. I also know that can be hard for people to understand because we live in a color rich print world.
Still, black and white can be loevly too (at least I try to make it so in my planner - as much as I'd love to make it color it would be totally unaffordable if I did) and I think your reputation and the buzz already surrounding Catholic Mosaic will make up for any lack of color.
God bless!

Natalia,
I think the issue of color is why Margot over at Hillside did a PLL that has color pictures in it (rather than the printing that Lost Classics did). Hillside's version is 8x11, spiral and has lovely prints in it (some different -- and better -- from the Lost Classics hardcover version).

I would definitely prefer a less expensive B/W version. Truthfully, though I really want to buy this resource, the pricetag has prevented me from getting it so far. I figured I would have to break down and splurge on it eventually, but I have been reluctant to approach dh with it due to price. $25 sounds more palatable to me, especially since I will need to buy all the books to go with.
I would go with color for anything my dc use, but since it is largely a resource for my eyes, I don't need color.

$14 difference?
Ilove my color version, but b/w wouldn't be a big deal in this case and $14 is enough to buy another book!

My sentiments exactly. I would be much more likely to care about color in a book for the dc, obviously. For myself, unless it is instructional (such as photos for crafts or recipes) I don't get that inspired by color.

I love my color version but had it only been available in black and white I would still love it. It is a great book no matter what and if making it B/W makes it available to more families then that is what you should do. There is a significant difference in price and as Martha said, you could use the difference to buy another book.
It must be maddening for authors and publishers to put so much hard work and love into a book project only to have the profit margins so tight. It would be nice if you could all make a comfortable living from what you do without this worry.
I appreciate Cay and Elizabeth and those like them who put so much effort and time into making their experience and wisdom available to us. Also publishers like Margot who take these authors efforts and work so hard to make them available to all of us.
They would make a lot more money and have less stress writing and publishing Harlequin romances.
