The 3 days preceding the Ascension. In German we don't use the term "Rogation" (I don't really know what that means) but "Bittgang" = petitioning procession (my translation)
Today at Mass we had a procession praying the Litany of the Saints for a good harvest, protection from natural disasters, peace, health.... many things. I don't remember taking part in such a procession in my younger years, although I grew up in an agricultural community. Maybe we did have these processions , and I was just unaware.
In a book I have read a loud to the girls, written by Anne Pellowski, the polish american family takes their seeds to Mass with them to be blessed on this day.

Does your Parish offer such a procession ? Did you grow up with this? Do you even think about such days in the Church's year and does it mean anything to you? Is it something you want your children to cherish?

Our suburban diocese doesn't observe Rogation days. I have never lived anywhere that has. What a blessing for you!

What is the name of the book?

I write a little about Rogation days at Catholic Culture last week, and it touches on ways to observe at home.

The book is the 2nd in a series from Bethlehem Books, "Winding Valley Farm, Annie's Story". It is set in 1908 in the midwest. The very first chapter is called "The seeds get blessed". Just like the kids in the book, it is nice to pray while walking for a change!

Jenn, I just read your post on Catholic Culture - so very helpful!

An older woman just told me the reason we pray these prayers right before the Ascension is so that the Lord takes all our prayers and petitions with Him up to Heaven!

Our Anglican parishes observed Rogation Days; in our Church of England parish we did a yearly Beating of the Bounds (huge procession, much incense, choir/hymns, stopping to bless various things along the boundaries of the parish, pub lunch following).

I've never been in a Catholic parish that did anything like this, and it's one of the things I've missed . . . :) Lovely to hear what your parish did, Stephanie!

Sally, if you live in a rural area, maybe you can even suggest it to the priest now for next year. If he has never experienced it himself, maybe you can give him info. All you need are a couple of men to carry the banners, incense bearers and the Priest , of course. The people at daily Mass are there anyway and beforehand the Priest could talk it up. I am sure people would be interested. We just had the Litany of the Saints during the procession and then continued with Holy Mass. It can be very simple and beautiful.

These movable days sneak up on me! I can't believe the Easter season is almost over!

Thanks for the statue link. I'd prefer a stone or concrete statue. These are pricey!

Yes, I prefer the "real" not polyresin ones also. This particular one (with all the different finish looks) is available at a lot of sites and is considerable cheaper at many. Just linked to the Aquinas and More since it could picture them all at once.

I think it is also probably cost prohibitive to offer stone or concrete statues online because of shipping. I wonder if a garden center that sells them couldn't do special orders for saints that are not as popular, like Isidore.
