I thought I'd start this thread so those with the book can share ideas and thoughts about Catholic Mosaic and the books recommended within it.
I'm very excited to get moving on it! We're slated to start the next level of grades in June, so that's the section I'm starting with. Anyone care to join me in this? I'm thinking we'll have enough time to order and gather the books for June.
I noticed there are additional books under the Catholic Mosaic Booklist. I'm assuming they are intended as suppliments. But they don't have an annotation like the other books or a recommendation for using them under the monthly plans. Maybe we could share tips on those as we go too?

I hope I am not posting in the wrong area about this Martha, I have just become a member from Australia, and we are all eagerly awaiting the first shipment of this book! I have earmarked one since I believe I would have so many of the books on the booklist already by looking at February's listing. At present though, I have only seen the books listed for February - is there a site I can hop on to see the full listing?

This is a great medium to use for dicussion.
I received this question this morning from Sarah:
"I am looking at this as a tool for faith formation, to help my son on his road to the sacraments. Is this suitable? Am I correct in thinking this would be excellent supplementary material (along with atrium instruction) to use to prepare my son to come into the church? He is 9, and unbaptised, so will need some sort of RCIC but I want to be working now and present the work we do to our priest (when we move and find our new parish) as a fait accompli! We are already doing a first communion notebook, as well. The liturgical year is something that seems to be sort of ignored in CCD classes, at least it was in mine. I am learning so much as I work with my kids. Your "Catholic Mosaic" looks wonderful."
My reply:
"Thank you for writing, Sarah, and for your kind words.
I truly believe picture books (that are rich and vibrant in illustrations and text) can teach us all so much. It is no revelation that Catholics lack knowledge of our rich and beautiful faith. The "DaVinci Code" proves that.
Rather than hand anyone---a 9 yr old or a 60 yr old---a college text book or a book that is too deep for the lay person to understand (let alone a child), I believe these (illustrated) books can teach us so much (without driving us to our knees in frustration).
Do I think Catholic Mosaic makes excellent supplementary material with an atrium included? Certainly! No doubt about it. Your 9 yr old will gain more from these picture books than he ever would from an hour long CCD class.
My dd will be 9 in October. She loves all these books and probably gained the most from our Mosaic study last year.

I've just gone through the booklist, and checked out my library's website. I'm really amazed at how many of the books they do have.  I didn't think that they would have more than a couple, but they had 31!!!
I've got the Joan of Arc books on hold, so we'll be starting soon.

31 books at your local library!!!? Wonderful!
I wanted to address this as well.
Inside Catholic Mosaic you will see the question:
Do I need to purchase the individual titles studied in Catholic Mosaic?
As a wife whose dh's company is on the verge of a possible strike, I am truly sympathetic and aware how families are not always able to spring $$$ for books (though personally, I buy books before food  ). But some hubbies and children don't always understand this book fettish and rightly so...I mean, we must feed our families...so I give several different options in my answer:
"No, although all of these beautiful books would make a great addition to your personal collection, you can easily borrow them from the local library. If your local library does not have a particular title, make a book request. Every library has a book budget so help them spent it!
"If your church has a lending library, check with the pastor or Director of Religious Education about purchasing some of these titles for the younger children. If your church doesn't have a library, look into getting one started. If all else fails consider giving your children some of these books as Christmas, birthday, and/or feast day gifts."
A list of suppliers is included in the book.
Since I know it's not simple or always possible to speak to your pastor or DRE and start a parish library...in fact, it's a BIG task...and it's personally very nice to have the books on your home shelves (knowing you'll get extended use out of them through your grandchildren ) I suggest getting at least one book per month. This will extend the Mosaic into---at least--- a four year course. 
Makes it rather easy to do, don't you think.

Thank you soo much for this Martha, as we have to factor in time for postage to Australia we need to pre-order. Then again I'm not even sure we will have the
Mosaic in June, it may be July before we could get it. Don't suppose you could post July's titles

That would be fantastic, actually I'd already checked to see if they had done so.  Cay I'm so excited about this book, I don't believe I've been so excited since Elizabeth's book.
Actually you'll laugh, but if I have the baby a couple of days late I'll be eligiable for an extra $1000 from the govt. (I'm in the new tax year)I've already asked dh if this happens could I have the money to spend on Mosaic titles. He hasn't agreed...yet.
Gee, there is no way my library will have one title let alone 31

For those in the USA working through public libraries, don't forget to check out Inter-Library Loans (ILL). This is a national borrowing program. You might have to pay a small fee per book to cover shipping. You ask your local library to request the book from any available library source. They research it and borrow the book. When it comes in (2-3 months, possibly), you check it out and return it just like any other book.
With some advance planning, you may just be able to find most of the titles you need.
For example, your library could contact Noreen's library and get 31 titles from their system. They may trickle in, or arrive together...I don't know how quickly each county's system can get this done. If you plan and request books 3 or 4 months ahead, though, you could do OK.
Just a thought from a frugally-minded library fiend...currently holding library cards in three states...

I haven't contacted Anna at Fountain resources recently, I'll do so today. I've already pre-ordered with her Excited to hear the book is on its way.
I know Literature Alive hasn't arrived  I'm sure St Anthony has it all under control. Hard to wait though. It is nerve racking when parcels take so long.
Thanks for all this Margot, I'm sure its more confusing shipping overseas than domestically. Just as a matter of interest how many countries are you sending the Mosaic out to? We have a few countries on the forum I know.

You know . . .it's funny but that is the first way I got books to the Aussie ladies. A priest who works at the school where my husband teaches is from Australia, and last summer he carried some in his luggage. I'll have to find out if he is going home this summer!

First of all, thank you to everyone who has purchased Catholic Mosaic and written such nice comments on it. You are all so sweet.
My publisher and I are brainstorming how to field questions and ideas concerning Catholic Mosaic. As my publisher mentioned, once this resource gets into the creative hands of all of you, we're sure there will be several ideas and activities springboarding off this manual that will be beneficial to all Catholic parents/educators.
We have also begun collecting book titles of new religious books that we are finding and that are being newly published. We would like to have all these titles collected into one general area. If the first volume of Catholic Mosaic is successful, Hillside Publisher envisions unfolding Volume II.
We want to share the wealth of children's literature that is out there. How can we do so?
We thought it best to ask the ones using this new resource. What would work best for you?

I find this forum to be good. I really have no desire to be apart of another yahoo e-group.
I have a few questions...
How do you suggest we use the additional books listed in Mosaic, but not given a study guide for?
Is WhipperSnapper books still in business? I'm having a hard time finding all except 1 of the June books to purchase (our wee library doesn't have them either).
I'd like to see a forum where we can discuss the books and share how we use them in our homes. Hope to see that somewhere as more of us purchasers get deeper into the Mosaic.

There are at least three Catholic Mosaic threads and we haven't even really begun to discuss the books yet .
I almost moved this thread to Living Faith because it's SO about formation. But then again, it's about literature too. Soooooo....
what if we open another forum called "Catholic Mosaic?" That way, you could have a thread for every book and it would all get archived in a neat and tidy way. We'd know where to go for all things pertaining to Catholic Mosaic...
Just an idea.We have the technology (well, Tim does )
