Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Besides going to Mass we have never celebrated All Saint's Day. We are changing that this year and my boys are excited about it. I've been searching post and blogs and have a list of ideas and I'm about ready to make up our plans and prepare . . . . I really want to see what others are planning this year.

Cost is a big concern at the moment and because of that we won't be dressing up (I have nothing on hand to make any either). Games, stories, and food are really my only ideas at the moment. I'm expecting the boys to give a short presentation about a Saint of their picking too.

We're taking today off school, and going to Mass, of course, though not till the evening. If it's not raining, we'll do a bonfire outside and roast hotdogs -- really fun, since it's a Friday Solemnity! In the afternoon we're going to meet some friends to play. None of this is terribly saint-y, but just taking the day to kick up your heels a little is, I think, a tiny foretaste of heaven . . .

Our parish does a huge All Saints party, though that's not till tomorrow night, with games, catacombs, saint skits, etc. So that will be our main celebration.

My youngest daughter's best friend will be here with us for two days, while her parents are doing their veterinary re-licensing in-service course, so I'll get them to set us a fancy table (for the hotdogs . . . but it's all about the centerpiece, anyway . . . )

One good, relatively easy "boy" saint costume would be Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati: basically just a pair of pants and a button-up shirt. Suspenders if you have or can rig something up. A friend of mine who came by with her family last night for Halloween was telling me that her 7-year-old son had said that for All Saints he wanted to be "the handsome saint" -- he was talking about Bl. Pier Giorgio!

Or you can all dress as "saints-in-training," ie yourselves! One lady in our parish always puts that on her nametag at the All Saints party, I guess because she doesn't like dressing up. Anyway, that's always a very easy "costume."

Have a fun day! I love this time of year.

Sally
