Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So I've just read this and it's reminded me of something I've been wondering about recently, how and when to talk to your children about doing a nightly examination of conscience.

Is this something that you do with your child? At what age is it appropriate to think about this? I try to have a talk with my 3 year old DD every night about anything that came up during the day, e.g. I'll try to explain why I want her to listen to me and I'll ask her forgiveness if I've lost my patience with her during the day. It's kind of an examination of conscience, I guess.

When they are young, I like to talk about what happened during the day. I agree, going over like that with your DD is an examination of conscience.

As my boys tend to be melancholic, I want to include positive and negative behaviors. So we will talk about the day, thanking Jesus for the great blessings and fun we had. I will sometimes verbalize some of the events or highs (first piano lesson, wonderful artwork, safe trip home, etc.) or sometimes they will verbalize them.

Then I ask (they answer in their own head) how have I shown love for Jesus today? How have I remembered Him throughout the day? Did I talk to Him in special ways today? Have I seen Jesus in my brother? Did I do anything special or extra for someone today?

And I also incorporate questions like Did I obey my parents immediately? Did I do things without complaining or talking back? Did I need to be asked or reminded to do my jobs? Was I kind to my brother? etc.

I don't want to be nitty-gritty, but give them a little idea of how to think about the day.

And then we conclude with an informal act of contrition, focusing first adoring and loving Jesus, thanking Him for the blessings, and voicing how we failed to love Him and show Him our love. We ask for our guardian angels and Mary to help remind us to remember to love Jesus through the day, and ask Jesus for more graces to be even more loving tomorrow.

And ask Mama Mary to watch us through the night, and cover us with her mantle.

I also add things that are applicable to me, so they don't think I'm pointing out their faults. So was I impatient, did I talk unkindly to members of my family, show bad example, etc. includes the parents, too.

Sometimes I do this alone with the individual child, sometimes I do together with both my boys.
