I got a message today from google chrome that "Catholic Culture" has been shown to be a distributor of malware. Last week our laptop had a virus, but we didn't know where it came from. I had a link to "Catholic Culture" on my blog and had also installed their widget for the saints of the day. I removed both and don't get the google chrome message again. Has anybody else had this problem?

They did have a virus attack in the middle of July. It looks like something has happened again, because I'm getting the message visiting their site. They thought they had cleaned it all and put up prevention.

I guess not. The virus was really hard to get rid of. We had to remove our anti-virus protection to remove the virus.

Visiting blogs that have installed the widget from "Catholic Culture" (e.g. Chari's blog), will cause the same warning.

I just got this message from Jeff Mirus at Catholic Culture:
Quote:
As many of you know, CatholicCulture.org has been attacked again. Google scanners picked up communication between "bad" servers and our web server, and flagged us. This caused CatholicCulture.org to be blocked by all web browsers and security utilities which rely in part on Google's determinations, such as Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
We believe that we have once again staved off this attack. The security experts at our hosting company state that at no time during this attack was a payload delivered to users' computers. The purpose of this attack was apparently to disrupt our internal operations and adversely affect our reputation through widespread warnings.
I have gone through the process of requesting a Google reevaluation, and my expectation is that this will lead reasonably quickly to the warnings being removed.
Meanwhile, you can choose the option to click through to our pages despite the warnings without danger to your computer.
We have been fighting off a sustained attack for about a month now, and with each passing exploit we at least get closer to eliminating the threat entirely. I hope, but cannot promise, that this will be the end.
Please, your prayers remain essential! |

Eva, I don't think the virus came from Catholic Culture. I heard from Dr. Mirus again. The Widget never carried a virus, nor did the website. The attacks on the website were not to do anything to a users’ computer. The purpose was apparently to disrupt the CC service by spreading warnings everywhere.
Any site that had a link to Catholic Culture, including a widget, would eventually be blocked, but only because of the link—-not because of any infection.
It has been cleared, but Google needs to reevaluate to clear the warning.
