Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

While reading the saint of the day on the Laudate app, I read that Mary Magdalen is the sister of Lazarus. I had never heard of this. Have you?

I feel silly that I had never heard of this!

Yes, this is a very traditional view (Fathers of the Church) of Mary Magdalene, that she was the sister of Lazarus and Martha. Later scholars have disputed this, but nothing is a teaching of the Church which view to see.

I personally believe she is (I think Scott Hahn thinks this, too). If you think about it, the viewpoint of the Church is she is one and the same Mary, sister of St. Martha. After all, St. Martha has her feast day, but Mary doesn't? And yet, didn't Mary "choose the better part" which we just read yesterday?

The woman (included in this article, also) who anoints Jesus' feet with her tears and ointment is also considered the same Mary (at Bethany), although this is less likely, because Mary's family wouldn't be considered prominent if she had been living loosely .

But this is an area of personal choice, tradition with a small "t" and not the teaching Tradition of the church.
