Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We live in a VERY old house, a good 150 plus years old. It has a long history.
Shortly after we moved in here, not even settled in, I was sitting in the living room and happened to look through the doorway as I saw an old man walk through the house. It was a spirit. I am not the only one that has seen him.
My daughter tells me of the woman that she would see on the second level of this house. Whether they are memories of the house, or spirits wandering I do not know. I personally do not feel any threat from them.
That said, my son had a bedroom upstairs and eventually asked to move out and switch bedrooms with his sister. She agreed and so it happened. The reason he asked was there again, is something tied to him room. Two spirits of some sort actually. He was afraid of them. I have used Holy Water but that didn't do much. (I don't think I had much faith at that time though, I have moved a long way in my path of love of God.) He recently moved back into this bedroom and does not remember what was in there. But was concerned about the old man I made reference to.
So, how does one handle this type of situation?
Do I use blessed salt? Do I try Holy Water again? Or do I seriously sit down with my husband and have a talk and ask for our priest to come and bless the house? I need to find a way for my kids to rest peacefully.
He does not have any pictures of Jesus or Mary in the room. Would that help?
Thank you for reading and for your thoughts.

I'm juggling swim team levels this morning so I don't have but a few minutes. So this will be short.

1) I'd start with the catechism and see what it says about spirits just so that I could think rightly.

2) I would definately use blessed salt and holy water (from what I understand if you put the salt in the water and use that you get the salt as residue sticking in place) but again, I'd look this up before proceding.

3) and I would definately talk to my priest about what you're experiencing AND about having the house blessed or whatever if needed.

There's so much weird paraormal information out there from Ghost Busters to Ghost Whisperer that I know I'd have a hard time seperating out the fiction which is why I'd look to the Catechism and Church authority on what it is and how to deal with it appropriately.

Ditto what Jodie said.

I would talk to my priest and have the house blessed. Your priest may have other suggestions as well.

A novena said for the poor souls certainly could not hurt, either.

I know two priests who are exorcists, and they have both said that some people ask for exorcisms without really having an understanding of when exorcisms are needed. I think Jodie's suggestion of beginning with the Catechism is excellent.

Talking with your priest is definitely a good plan.

I cannot find my Catechism and it is only a small one, so I went on-line and searched it through Catechism. I have opened dialogue between myself and my husband. Umm - after reading what I did. I would REALLY like to ask my priest, but want hubbys consent first. He is not Catholic - yet - but will be starting conversion classes in the fall.
I hope he agrees. My oldest son is really being bothered/upset by it.

YIKES! Reading more I realize that because of my past, I have portals that are at their disposal! That is NOT good. Now I need to go through things from my past to get rid of those things and keep calm.
That means
"JUST SAY NO!!
to Ouija boards, séances, mediums, automatic writing, tarot cards, or other supernatural methods for obtaining information."

I have tarot cards I never used and forgot all about!

I have had a priest tell me that even non-Catholics often engage Catholic priests for house blessings at such times.

I'd talk to my priest about my situation, and maybe he would be able to help you understand what is necessary to do and better bring it up to your husband in a non-threatening way. Yes, you would definitely want your husband's consent before bringing him into your home, but I'm not sure you would need his consent to ask his advice. You know your relationship with your husband best, of course. Just my opinion.

My husband just e-mailed me back and told me to go ahead and talk to him. Yay! And.... no answer at the office at this moment. Left a message.

Good job Jill,
Just a heads up, if the first priest does not take this seriously, keep looking

We have friends whose son is a priest and he called in the exorcist to work on his church building. So it can happen anywhere!

Jill,
Try to guard your interior peace. I know this isn't easy - it is an act of the will though so you CAN do it! Interior disquiet and being generally unsettled can also be harmful to you and the children. The children, especially, need you to communicate calm.

You've talked with your husband. You plan to contact your priest ASAP! GOOD! That's exactly what I would do! And...I would stop looking anything else up online. No need to feed this with any more information.

You know you and your children are troubled.
You know this isn't of the natural world.
You're going to call your priest for supernatural assistance.
You don't need to know any more.

Guard! Guard! Guard!

1) Ask for God's grace and assistance in guarding your peace and guarding your children.

2) Enlist Our Lady, and ask her to simply wrap you and your children in her mantle of protection. Tell her you trust her, trust her protection, and entrust your children to her. And then have great peace in that!

3) Now your work! Brainstorm 2 - 3 "good" thoughts. This is really simple so don't over-think it! It's just like you'd do with the kids when they have a bad dream - you'd help them come up with a good thought to put in place of the memories of the bad dream so they don't get stuck going down that road. So, for yourself, you can choose something fun or neutral even, as a "go-to" when you catch yourself thinking of what's going on. Maybe you could go to your school planning if you catch yourself dwelling or thinking of the situation in any way. Any little thought will do - think of how you're going to reorganize your kitchen cabinets if you need to! Just have a ready thought to go to when needed!

4) Add a couple of quick prayers to your pocket - literally if you need to! Something like:
    Jesus, save souls!
Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us!
Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy!
There are many others! Or just say a quick Hail Mary! Just choose a couple and get in the habit of "firing off" a quick prayer when you sense that unsettled feeling.

5) You and the children pray the Guardian Angel prayer and the St. Michael prayer at least daily. Renew these prayers any time you feel unsettled! These are your supernatural warriors! CALL ON THEM!

6) I just read your last post - I'm glad you're in contact with your priest. You are in need of local, personal help, and though we can certainly pray for you, there are limits to the help this board can offer.

I will pray for you and your family, Jill.

I was called back and was referred to Catholic Charities. I have NO idea if they can help, but I am going to give that a try too.
Thank you for your support ladies!
And interestingly enough I found a have a prayer card that had been tucked away for Saint Michael the Archangel! Hmmm...

I'm not sure why Catholic Charities was recommended to you, Jill. That doesn't make sense to me. As Aagot said though, I'd call another priest.

Me neither Jen - me neither.
I am going to go back to square one and actually talk to my priest. This is an old town, I cannot be the only one to ever have this.

Do NOT call Catholic Charities ....keep calling priests until you find one that will take you seriously.

Here is a great St. Anthony prayer for troubling times:

Behold the Cross of the Lord!
Depart powers of darkness!
Jesus,
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah,
The Root of David has Conquered!
Alleluia! Alleluia!

I believe this prayer has been used for centuries. It's one of my favorites...
THe Lion of the Tribe of Judah is guarding you!

Yes, this. Something similar happened to a friend and our priest thought it was her father (in purgatory). I am sorry, I don't know exactly what they did but I know our priest went to her house.

I am going to morning Mass today and will try and talk to him in person after Mass.
You don't think this is all peaking now because I am doing a consecration to Our Mother do you??

Perhaps Our Lady is gently nudging you to resolve this issue, since it has been going on for awhile, and your children are upset. You how moms are- they want their houses in order

I think speaking to your priest in person is the way to go vs. calling. Maybe you could even make an appointment with a priest and just say you need some counseling, and then tell him the whole story once you are there. That way you won't get the Catholic Charities heave ho again- that is frustrating.

Jill,

I had a similar situation in our home many years ago..

I did get my Priest to come and Bless the house, but I also took action.
My mother suggested to throw Holy Water in every room- every corner of every room and every area that is troublesome.
I had a horrible smell- evil smell, that wouldn't go..I threw Holy water at every corner of that room and repeated the words as I did this "Jesus lives here"...

I went through a lot of Holy Water but it worked.
The other think I would do, would be to put a Blessed medal of St Benedict in your home, particularly where you are sensing this activity..
Images of Our Lady and The sacred heartof Jesus are also helpful..
repeat your Guardian Angel prayer..

Its important that you reclaim your home.I pray you get a Priest to come to your home who will help you..
Pm me if you need any further help..

Leanne

Since you are looking to put a crucifix in your home anyway, you might consider a St. Benedict cross. This is the type of crucifix that Rome's exorcist uses, and the St. Benedict medal is embedded in the cross behind the corpus.
