Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son (who's almost 12) needs to memorize (among other things!) both the 7 Gifts and 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit for his Confirmation test. Does anyone have any neat memorization techniques for this? I'm trying to come up with something that will help him memorize it and that will stick with him at test time.

Thanks!

Our deacon told my girls this acronym for 7 gifts and so far it's stuck for them:

KWFF CUP   pro:(kwiff-cup). means absolutely nothing, but it's TOTALLY FUN to SAY!

knowled, wisd, fortitu, fear-lord, counsel, understanding, piety

We did:
Wisdom
Counsel
Knowledge
PUFF (Piety, Understanding, Fortitude, Fear of the Lord)
Our cat is named Puff :)

Then for the 12 Fruits we did:
CC PP GGG
JKFMS (remembered as Josh and Kait fool Mom sometimes)

It worked for us. Basically re-arranging letters into meaningful things for our family.

Maybe that helps?

When I was young, I learned The Fruit of the Spirit Song. I learned it a little differently from the video, but its probably still as effective, lol. I've taught many a squirmy children's choir member the fruits of the spirit this way

ETA: It isn't all of the "Catholic" ones, but its a good start, lol.

There is also a great book called "Memorize the Faith" that uses the system of Loci to memorize all sorts of things relating to the faith. It is a fun system and the book is very helpful. I have used it myself, with my kids, and I have taught it in religious Ed classes.

Wee Believers has some cute products to make it easy for memorizing the Fruits of the Holy Spirit! Here's one of them: Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Any other creative ideas for memorizing the gifts and fruits? Those are the two religion memorization topics coming up in Classically Catholic Memory.

I've searched the internet with limited success. The fruits, especially, seem difficult because most of the things I've found are to help memorize nine fruits (as opposed to the Catholic 12).

Our problem is that apparently names of changed: counsel = right judgement, fortitude = courage, piety = reverence and awe. Really! I have been teaching dd (16 yrs) the other names! Also, I find a lack of any good explanation of the gifts. For instance the difference between wisdom and understanding. Either an explanation is too high and lofty (I mean some definitions SOUND good but really - hard to understand)

So, not to hi jack the thread but does anyone know a site online that defines the gifts in everyday terms AND give good examples in terms of use in our daily lives!

Such a good question, Barb. I'm watching, too.

(And since our kids are learning from the Baltimore Catechism, they are learning the "old" names. Benignity, Long-suffering, Continency.... ).

The changed names to some of the 7 gifts:
fortitude = courage
piety = reverence
fear of the Lord = wonder and awe
counsel = right judgement
The rest are the same: understanding, wisdom, knowledge.

Within our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atriums recently, we arranged the names of the gifts such that at the youngest level, they received simpler forms of the names ("wonder and awe" instead of "Fear of the Lord" for example); then the 6-9 year olds get what they read from the book of Isaiah itself where it lists the Gifts of the Spirit.

In level 3, we give them the set of names and deeper definitions that the priest later uses in their Confirmation preparation - in the YouCat.

Now on to the Fruits ;)

Just coming on here to give a great, big shout of approval for this book. It's amazing. I can't recommend it enough. Well-worth the $15 on Amazon, in my opinion.

I think it's techniques would be good for kids approximately 4th grade and up. I am making use of it in our CCM co-op this year.
