Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Let's get to know our new Pope!

Became a priest at age 32- A Jesuit

Has only one lung

Is a chemist by trade

Is thrifty... when he became a cardinal he had the previous cardinal's robes altered to fit him

Please add more fun facts as you come across them!

He is a huge fan of the San Lorenzo soccer team in Argentina.

He's of Italian descent, his parents both Italian, but he was born and raised in Argentina.

So the Italians got a pope, too.

Typically the bishop or cardinal has to be driven. It was explained to me that it's a legal regard -- if he were to get into an accident when he was driving, there could be negative legal ramifications to his diocese. So our Pope Francis worked around this and took public transportation.

And instead of the cardinal mansion, he lived in a small house, heated by a small stove, and cooked his own meals.

A nun on FB said he's Salesian-educated and I have a friend who wants to know for sure. Anyone have further info on this?

He's a dead-ringer (or was, when he was younger) for the actor Jonathan Pryce.

Today he went to St. Mary Major and visited Our Mother. Beautiful pic of him offering flowers.

And did you hear that yesterday he took the bus along with the cardinals?

He's also very pro-life            .

A few images showing the uniqueness of our times.

2 pictures of 3 that would all be pope. 3 popes!

HT to Christine at Memories of a Catholic Wife and Mother.

HT to Bridget Our Magnum Opus.

This one was on Father Z's feed, but must have been removed from his blog. Pope watching new pope's election. Another first.

The first one up there isn't Pope Francis. The people who originally posted that apologized for making the mistake.

Pope Francis wasn't ordained an auxiliary bishop until 1992 and that photo is way older than that. It's from 1985; Pope Francis wasn't made a Cardinal until 2001.

Oh, and that shot of the Pope watching television was from a History Channel documentary a couple years back. I made the mistake of reposting it on FB and someone who had watched the documentary corrected me.

Aren't you the bearer of bad news, Stef?

I almost didn't post the one of Benedict watching TV, as there were certain clues (like the red shoes) that show that it's an older photo, but I like to think he probably WAS watching.

I think it's great that we're all so excited and eagerly embracing the new Holy Father. It's a bright spot during Lent and will prove to be a bright spot in Church history!

We love our Pope, we love our priests. That's the important part!!!

Moms at our Co-op are planning Pope Francis activities for the next few meetings...it's so cool!

I love the resurgence of interest in St. Francis, too. I've visited his tomb at Assisi a couple of times. So humble, surrounded by an atmosphere of peace. The people who visit his tomb are so very, very devout...it's amazing.

Sorry, Jenn!!!       I was in a hurry to leave earlier and didn't reread my post. It sounds so cold and matter of fact    YIKES. Didn't mean for it to sound that way. I reposted both pics also at Facebook because Lighthouse Catholic Media and American Papist posted them, and then apologized later on in the day.

And I really thought that was the Pope watching the same afternoon. Thought that was so cool. Until someone burst my bubble. Sorry again, didn't mean to burst anyone's! I'm sure he was watching!!

I'm sorry, Stef! I meant to be a winky face. I was just kidding. I appreciate knowing what is correct!

I think so, but it's hard to be sure.

Stephanie, I've been wondering, especially as we contemplate baby names , is the German for Francis, "Franz," or do you call him Francis still?
