Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just got this and I am not sure how best to use it. We do daily memorization. Do you memorize portions or just use it as discussion topics?

We read slowly through it, taking our time in memorizing a lot of the questions and answers and discussing the topics in short lessons 2-3 times a week. We actually used it over a period of 2 or 3 years, interspersing it with story books of saints, liturgical year activities, and Bible reading.

We played a "spelling bee" type game with a question and answer format and a roll the dice game to learn the Ten Commandments (roll the dice and say the Commandment corresponding to the number that comes up; I assigned two actions to 11 and 12-something like jumping jacks or hops-so, for example, if 11 came up the child had to do 11 hops. I started with one die when we knew 5 Commandments, and added the second dice after we learned all Ten.) I think we started using this around 6 years of age.

When the boys were in their First Communion class, they knew all the answers!

I love this Catechism for its clarity and for its illustrations, which I think really make an impression on children.

I agree. I think many of the pictures tell such a powerful story and are worth printing up in colour to place in the house where they will be seen daily. I say that because my mother raised me on these Catechisms as a child and I still refer back to pictures in my mind when explaining things to my children. In the older catechism with the dirty linen and the washing machine explaining sacrilegious confessions is one that comes to mind. In this catechism, I really love the sheep drinking from the 7 streams (sacraments) that come from the Church.

I just started using it with my two oldest and really like it so far. I have been taking two weeks for each lesson: I read aloud the whole lesson on the first day, and then for the next two weeks, we practice the questions and answers daily and discuss.

(I also want to make flashcards to review once a week as we go along...I thought for sure there would be some offered for free online somewhere, but I haven't found any yet. Does anyone else have a source before I start typing them out? )

What a beautiful idea! I just love this Catechism and agree the pictures really drive home the lesson. One of my sons, the one who has attention problems and I am always frustrated with, continues to amaze me when he randomly says "Mom, remember the picture where ..." and then goes on to talk about the point of that lesson. This happens months after we've read it together, and sometimes he's still remembering things the next year.

I'm thinking about getting an extra book that I can cut up and maybe have my older kids color the pictures so we can hang them up. Even the coloring activity will probably spur memories of lessons learned from their early years.

Regarding how we use the book, I have always just read and discussed the lesson with my child and then we take the following week to work on memorizing the questions and answers. Just five minutes a day seems most effective for these younger kids. If I go too long with the memory part I think they zone out.

I don't have any of my kids using this Catechism for the coming year. I'll miss it!

I just got it. It was highly recommended by the local HS moms. Hopefully G doesn't have too hard a time memorizing. Glad to hear the pics. add interest.

Incidentally, I nearly fainted when I saw the name of the author. Fr. Bennett Kelley was a friend of my Mom's. He gave me my first communion in my Mom's house when I was in K (w/ full permissions from the diocese). I miss him. He was an amazing priest, and everything made so much sense the way he explained it.

I was using this catechism the other night and realised this lovely picture is not in this book! Then I remembered it was the Seven Sacraments booklet by Fr Lovasik.

The pictures I do really love from this booklet are the fiery love from Jesus' heart burning away the wooden bar over the gates of heaven.
