Thank you!!

We give each child their own wooden crucifix for their first confession. On the back I write the date they received each sacrament(baptism and confession so far)--add to it as they receive each new sacrament. This way they will have a sacramental record for the rest of their lives and we have easy access to these dates to celebrate and remember.

We make a big deal of burning up the sins in the kitchen sink (write them on paper and burn them). This is a great visual!
I also like tying it in with baptism and the white garment and light that we received. This is straight from Catechesis of the Good Shepherd but can be done at home -- just recall the moment of the child's baptism, and what it means theologically. Emphasize that Reconciliation brings us back to that moment of being totally cleansed. Bring out the child's baptism garment and show pictures.
Light a large candle to represent the Paschal Candle and have the entire family renew baptism vows, and receive a small candle lit from the large one - to show that Jesus' light is still with us.
Just a couple of ideas :)
For my son's first Reconciliation, we also went out to lunch with the priest - he's a family friend and made a special planned stop during a road trip to be here for my son's first Reconciliation. Very, very special :) He also heard my son's confession again just before his first Holy Communion (given by my son's godfather, at said godfather's ordination to the priesthood!). :)

This is such a personal sacrament, that we make it a special time for our son, giving him choice for a treat. We would go out for a celebration, but it's a quieter one than First Holy Communion.
I know someone here suggested vanilla ice cream or other treats that reflect the cleansed "white" of the soul.

You can print out a special certificate... there are several free versions on line. They are nice to include in a FHC notebook or scrapbook

Congratulations Maggie on your daughter's first reconciliation! I know that this is a tad bit late, but hope it will benefit others!
My daughter made her first confession this past December She wore a simple red and white dress to remind her of the Holy Spirit and the graces she would receive from the sacrament. We also gifted her with red roses to symbolize the seal of the confessional and the book Take It To the Queen. For the evening meal, she was able to choose the menu, and then after leaving the church for the sacrament, of course we went out for ice cream!
If you would care to take a look at her day, you can get a little peek here :)
Blessings!

My daughter just made her first confession as well.
We went to the ceremony with her without the other children (this is a real treat to be alone with just Mom and Dad), and then let her choose to do something afterwards. She chose getting ice cream at the supermarket and sharing with her brothers. I'm so proud of her!
