Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know we have discussed this topic before.... in your family do you each choose a patron saint for the new year?

I have read that, in fact, when you participate in this devotion, your patron saint chooses *you* , and that he/she shares with you the special graces associated with him/her. Also, you will be under that saint's special protection.

One year I picked St. Damien of Molokai, and I have always felt that he has stuck by me since then, which is very kind of him.

So... do you pick? How do you choose? One year I printed out names and put them in a jar. One year we chose by flipping open a book of saints.... that is how I got St. Damien

Last year we didn't pick... I can't remember why.

I am looking for another creative way to choose this year.... any ideas?

We've picked every year for the last few. The first few years we did it, I took our Friendly Defender cards and put them in a bag for us all to pick one. Lately we've been using Conversion Diary's Saint Name Generator.

In the "how eerily appropriate" department, I used it last week when I needed some heavenly bolstering up regarding an in-law situation, and it gave me "Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton: patron saint of in-law problems"

Amy-

The generator is just what I was looking for! My kids are sitting here playing saint lotto, having the best time. Thanks!

This will be our 3rd year with a Saint of the year. I love how we have gotten to know our Saints and have that special bond with them. The first year, my oldest got Saint Jerome, and I think she was a little bummed out because she didn't get a girl Saint , but she has called on him the last 2 years, and wants him to be her confirmation saint.

We pray and then pick a name out of a jar (I printed out a bunch of saints and cut them out on little strips of paper - the ones we chose from had more obscure ones mixed in, so we are meeting many of them for the first time). Each night, after our rosary, we do a litany, and each child calls on their own saint (which has been especially cute hearing the 3 year olds say, "Saint Celestine the Fifth" and "Saint Gabriel of our Lady of Sorrows" ). We all research the saints, of course, in the beginning of the year. Also, last year for Easter, I made some of those little peg dolls for the children - they each got a little version of their Saint for the year. I will continue that for sure, as it was a huge hit.

Happy new year! Can't wait to see who we get this year!

We choose a saint of the month..

We make sure to choose one of each child's patron saints once a year and then I choose other saints based on our personal devotion to them or interest in their life or desire to focus on them in some way... each one being chosen of course in the same month the feast day is.

Jan 2012 is St. John Bosco... a superb man to have around our house full of boys. We have a picture printed off and framed in the dining room along with inspiring quotes he said. We include his name in the "pray for us" litany at the end of our Rosary. We'll read a book about him this month...

etc.
