We will be giving a gift to 2 newly ordained priests this year. One is an aquaintance (he's the Deacon at our parish) but we won't be at his Ordination or 1st Mass, so is a Mass Card appropriate....or should it include $$?
The other is a good friend of the boys, and is ds's Confirmation sponsor. Ds will be serving at his first Mass. So it should probably be a more personal gift. But what would that be? Should it be religious or (as my dd suggested) would a gift certificate to dinner or a store be appropriate?
Any other ideas?

A friend of ours was ordained last year and we gave him a really nice pen set - ink, etc. Hhe likes to write but I know he wouldn't spend money on such a set for himself.
Other gifts he received were things like books - some religious, some fiction or non fiction ( in general).

I have no idea really, but it's a good question. I don't know why you couldn't go either way. Since you know this second seminarian better you would have an idea of interests, likes, etc. We have recently gotten to know a couple of the seminarians as well and for Easter gave them gift cards (one who loves going to movies a movie gift card and the other a B&N book card). They were genuinuely excited with that.
The religious one is hard because it's hard to know what they already have (probably a lot of religious items/materials) and will be getting more from others for ordination gifts. The one thing that did strike me was something St. John Vianney (keychain, visor clip, picture, medal) since he is the patron of priests. And because the seminary is St. John Vianney it would be doubly significant for our seminarians, wouldn't it, Gwen?

I have a few friends who became priests. They viewed their ordination as their "wedding day" so to speak. I think one priest even had a "registry" of sorts.
There are quite a bit of things they have to buy for themselves once they become a priest, and it can be quite costly....and if any of your friends run in more traditional tastes, that costs more. Each priest likes to own their own vestments. And their alb is their own...and these can be quite fancy. We have some local priests who get special trimmings and vestments from Rome....and these are just exquisite.
Special books, like the "Book of Blessings" and the "Shorter Form of the Book of Blessings" and a portable holy water holder, and pyx, etc. A Sacramentary and lectionary, or at least a wonderful missal, like The Daily Roman Missal. Most parishes have these, but think of the priest when he's travelling or saying Mass in private.
You could also find out if he has a chalice and other sacred vessels. These cost quite a bit. He might accept money to help pay for these.
But you're right, a lot has to do with personal taste. If you don't know what he has or needs, money would be good, or a gift certificate to a place where he will be purchasing some of these religious goods.
A book I gave one friend which is now back in print is by Fulton Sheen, The Priest is Not His Own.

We give $$ so that they aren't burdened with material goods they don't need.
We have a very dear friend who was ordained last year. He appreciated the monetary gift.
If anything, I'd do a gift certificate to a Catholic bookstore or supply.

Gwen,
I agree with Jenn and Sarah. When Max's father was ordained a Deacon he really appreciated help purchasing all the "supplies" he needed. It can be quite costly. The store he purchased most things from is down on Santa Fe...hmm...I can't think of its name. Do you know which one I'm talking about? I think it starts with a "G". Oh, Girkins!

Wow - great ideas. Thanks Mary M for telling me about the thread. I had asked another priest about the thread and he suggested a Book of Blessings too.
Our seminarian is a TOR Franciscan and has sent a note saying that because of his vow of poverty gifts are not expected - except to help pay for the cost of the reception. But we want to get him something personal too.
