What is a "Traditional" Catholic? What is a TLM? What is "indult"? What is Novus Ordo? I think it means New Order but I'm not sure what exactly that means! Also, what is SSPX and is it bad? I've only been a Catholic for 5 yrs and in my reading have come across things I don'tknow anything about! I could google all this but I trust you ladies (and gentlemen) to point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,

I will try to answer your questions, but some of the answers are subject to opinion. A "traditional" Catholic is one who generally attends the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM)...that is the Mass as it was before Vatican II. That Mass uses the old prayers and rubrics as well as such things as no altar girls, communion received on the tongue and in a kneeling position, priest offers Mass with his back to the people (facing the tabernacle). Traditional Catholics often (though not always) follow the old rules pertaining to fasts and abstinence and follow the old calendar (which has saint feast days on different dates sometimes and includes MANY more days of fast/abstinence).

N.O. or Novus Ordo means New Order and it refers to the New Mass, ie, the Mass commonly offered since Vat. II.

SSPX is the Society of Saint Pius X and is a priestly order started by Archbishop Levebre. These priests are ordained under the old rite (again, the ordination that preceeded Vat. II) and ONLY offer the TLM and sacraments in the old rite. They have been in ongoing discussions with the Vatican and are NOT excommunicated, but have an uncertain status within the Church. They are never affiliated with local dioceses or bishops (they have thier own bishops) and, well....it is an awfully difficult situation to explain in a single email.

I would like to say that doing a google on the SSPX will bring up lots of information, but lots of GOSSIP, SLANDEROUS ACCUSATIONS, and basically bad information.

If you are interested in attending a Latin Mass, I would suggest finding an Indult Mass (these are the TLMs that are recognized and approved by the local Bishop, priest is assigned by the Bishop to this post). There are other priestly fraternities that are also in excellent standing with Rome and available in various places around the US, such as the FSSP (it is a Latin name, but I loosely translate it as Fraternal Society of Saint Peter) and the Institute of Christ the King (currently available in Wisconsin/Illinois). We are going to stay at a monastery in Oklahoma this week at which the priests offer only the Latin Mass (they were invited by the bishop to settle there). Their website is www.clearcreekmonks.org.
