Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for quotes that can be directly attributed to St Francis of Assisi. Some of the most famous quotes cannot. ie. Prayer of St Francis and "Preach the gospel at all times use words when necessary"

These are both great quotes, however I am creating a craft for the kids for the Feast of St Francis on Tuesday and really want an accurate quote.
If you have a source hiding in your bookmarks or bookshelves please
let me know!!

I've a book Voices of the Saints which for each entry has quotes from either the saint in question or contemporaries.

For Saint Francis of Assisi there is a short quote "What are the servants of God but his singers whose duty it is to lift up the hearts of men and women and move them to spiritual joy?"

There's also a longer hymn of praise starting "You are holy, Lord, the only God......" but my 3 week old is starting to look restless.

The book's source for St. Francis is Writings of Saint Francis of Assisi published by Franciscan Herald Press.

This Patron Saint Site seems to have prayers written by St. Francis of Assisi.. perhaps something there would work?

I was going to suggest the Canticle of the Sun (Laudes Creaturarum) - which is one of the links in the site Jodie listed. Some of those prayers are prayers written for intercession of St. Francis, but many are his actual words.

St. Francis wrote so few things.

You are correct that "Preach the gospel at all times use words when necessary" is not by him, but it does point to his story from the Little Flowers of St. Francis when he was "preaching" with a companion and all they did was walk up and down the street through town without saying a word.

Also "Prayer of St. Francis" isn't by him, but in the spirit of his prayers.

Just using one of the lines from the Canticle of the Sun is so powerful. I just love that prayer. There is a gorgeous picture book illustrated by Elizabeth Orton Jones (old and out of print) that I just love to read to my boys -- it really makes it a prayer. I have some pictures on this blog post.

The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom by Father John A. Hardon has a few of the writings of St. Francis:

Rule of 1223
Testament of St. Francis
Admonitions
Letter to all the Faithful
Praises of God
The Blessing for Brother Leo
Canticle of Brother Sun
Praises of the Virtues

The Blessing for Brother Leo

Quote:
God bless you and keep you
May God smile on you, and be merciful to you;
May God turn his regard towards you
and give you peace.

May God bless you, Brother Leo.

If your library has either of these, you can find the true sources for St. Francis either from St. Francis of Assisi: Writings and Early Biographies: English Omnibus of the Sources for the Life of St. Francis (this one is volume 1) or Francis and Clare: The Complete Works (The Classics of Western Spirituality).

Since my mom is a Secular Franciscan, I always give her my copies when I find them, but if there's anything I can look up, I can ask her.

ETA: I fixed some errors.

My mother shared some of her favorite quotes with me this morning. I told her I wanted some good ones that my 8 year old would understand in his copywork:

::We adore Thee, O Christ, present in this tabernacle and all the tabernacles of the world and we bless Thee, because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

::Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility.

::Let us begin again to serve the Lord with all our heart for up to now we have done nothing.

::O humble sublimity! O sublime humility! That the Lord of the universe, God and the Son of God, so humbles Himself that for our salvation He hides himself under a morsel of bread. (Letter to the Whole Order)

::Therefore keep back nothing of yourself for yourself that He may receive you entirely who gives Himself entirely to you. (Letter to the Whole order)

::Pax et bonum!
Peace and All Good!

::From “Perfect Joy”
Above the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit which Christ gives to His friends is that of conquering himself and willingly enduring sufferings, insults, humiliations, and hardships for the sake of Christ.

::O most high, glorious God, cast Your light into the darkness of my heart and give me right faith, firm hope, perfect charity and profound humility, with wisdom and insight, Lord, that I may know and accomplish Your holy and true will.

and this prayer

Thank you for this! I wanted to incorporate something from St. Francis in our copywork today as well. :)
