Don't know if this is the right place to post this, but does anyone have experience with this?
Our parish is doing this. It was originally going to be the PSR topic for 6th-8th grades. When I viewed the videos at the website, I initially felt that this was not something I wanted my 6th and 7th grade sons doing in a group of other boys and girls that may or may not act appropriately. I'm not expressing myself well...sorry. I just feel like this is a topic we should cover at home. Maybe I am missing something.
I did talk to our priest about it. I had a few other parents talk to me about their concerns. So, the class has been tabled until there is a parents' meeting.
I just wondered if I am being unreasonable about thinking that maybe this class is not a good idea, at least for my boys.
Thank you.
Jen

While I do not have experience with this particular product I do have vivid memories of the embarrassed giggles when our school discussed similar topics in grade six.
I strongly feel that children at the cusp of puberty should not be taught such topics in a mixed class and that it should be made easy for more easily embarrassed or sensitive children to opt out of the classroom section of such lessons. Discussing such topics in a classroom setting while dealing with new body changes and feelings isn't ideal.

Totally agree with ekbell, especially for this age. I don't think you are being unreasonable at all, Jen. :)

Jennifer,
I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. There was talk of doing Theology of the body for middle/highschoolers in our Catholic co-op. I did not even have to see anything, but instead volunteered to teach an apologetics class. As it turned out, when the other parents got to view the materials, they all agreed that they did not want that class.
We recently experienced something similar at a local Totus Tuus summer program for the older kids. In a letter, I listed about 12 reasons (wish I had kept a copy) outlining why I thought it was inappropriate. Some of the things were:
1. I did not want my children to think it was acceptabe to discuss that stuff with their friends or acquantiances.
2. It is the parents' job to bring this stuff up when they feel the child is ready. All chilren are different, some being more ready than others at different times in their lives.
3. I did not want the kids to think they needed to speak to others, and not us about these things.
4. With all the beautiful Catholic teachings to discuss, why discuss this?
5. Isn't this more pre-cana type material?
6. You never know what questions will come from other children in the class that may be inappropriate.
I can't remember the rest. After praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance, there were pleanty more.
God bless,
Kristen

Thank you, Kristen. There is a parent meeting tomorrow night. Our priest would really like most of us to attend. I really don't think my ind will be changed, but your list has helped me organize my thoughts on the matter.

Just a quick note: About 14 years ago, a friend and I were asked to present a short series on the same general topic using The New Corinthians curriculum. We had 6th to 8th grade girls. I can't remember anything offensive about the curriculum. The problem that arose was that these girls came from vastly different experiences and maturity levels. Some of the older girls in public school spoke of shocking things in front of the "naive" sixth grade Catholic school girls.
My own dd was similarly scandalized by a classmate when she was in Catholic school in the third grade. So, unfortunately, it is not the curriculum that speaks loudest.
