My ds who is 12 just had his first experience with boys his own age "Catholic bashing" and questioning his religion. I have the Friendly Defender cards but am looking for suggestions on a book which will provide him with more in depth information but not be over his head.

I purchased a wonderful booklet at our Catholic bookstore for around $6.00. I also purchased the study guide
Look at the link to read the reviews and look inside at the table of contents & a sample page. At about 40 pages it's thin in comparison to many apologetic books, however, it is quite thorough as the table of contents will show.
Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith

The Prove-It series by Amy Welborn is great!
There are 4 books: God, Church, Jesus, Prayer.
Here are some example questions from
Prove It: Church
What Church Do You Go To?
Why Isn’t Your Church a ‘Bible Only’ Church?
Why Don’t You Read the Bible Literally?
Why Aren’t Some of Your Beliefs in the Bible?
Why Doesn’t Your Church Let You Interpret Scripture?
Why Has Your Church Added Books to the Bible?
Why Were You Baptized as a Baby?
Why Aren’t You Saved?
Why Does Your Church Say You’re Saved by Works, Not by Faith?
Why Do You Pray to Saints?
Why Do You Honor Mary So Much?
Why Does Your Church Have Statues?
Why Do you Believe That the Pope is Infallible?
Why Do You Confess to a Priest?
Why Do You Call Priests, “Father?”
Why Do You Believe In Purgatory?
You can find a summary of all 4 books on the Amy Welborn's website.
The Catholic Company has a good deal on all 4 books PLUS the Prove It Teen Bible for a great discounted price here.

Jen, What age would you recommend this series for? My almost 10ds friend has been asking some pointed questions and I would like to find something along these lines for my son to read.
God Bless,

Hi Rebecca,
I have a 10 yo ds and I can't imagine him sitting down to read the books. That said, they are laid out simply in question and answer format, so you can look for the question that you are interested in and turn to that page. Mater Amabilis recommends them for Junior High / Early Secondary (approx. ages 11-13).
For a 9/10 year old, I think I'd go with the Friendly Defenders cards:(review taken from the Love2Learn Apologetics book review site)
Friendly Defenders by Matt Pinto and Katherine Andes
2001, Ascension Press, 50 full color glossy cards, Catholic
Each packet of Friendly Defenders Catholic Flash Cards includes 50 cards covering 12 categories: Tradition, Church, Papacy, Eucharist/Mass, Salvation, Purgatory, Baptism, Mary, Saints, Confession, Statues & Holy Objects, and Holy Orders. The purpose of the cards is to assist children, ages 8 and up, and teenagers to be able to defend their faith with clear and easy explanations against the typical questions about the Catholic faith.
On the front of each card is a number and color code, category and topic, a very “cool” looking boy or girl with a name such as Curious Connie, and a question or statement about the Catholic faith. On the back of each card is another “hip” looking boy or girl with a name such as Joyful Joey, giving the Catholic response. There is also a Bible verse and additional comments at the bottom of the card to explain the answer. Also included are Bible references with related Bible verses. For example, in the Category of “Purgatory” and the topic of “Purpose of . . .”, Questioning Quincy states, “Purgatory is not necessary. You’re either saved or not saved.” Gracious Grace gives the reply on the back. “Purgatory is only for the saved. It’s a place or state where those who died in God’s friendship are made perfect so they can enter heaven of which St. John writes. . . ‘Nothing unclean will enter it’ (Rev. 21:27). You can view sample cards at the Friendly Defenders Website.
These cards are unique in that they are not just basic catechism questions, but questions that non-Catholics often have about the Catholic faith and these cards supply young people the tools to effectively reply to those misconceptions. Colorful and contemporary, Friendly Defenders Catholic Flash Cards offer kids a fun way to learn to defend the faith.
Friendly Defenders are now available in transparencies for classroom use. There is also a Spanish version. And you have the option of ordering them with or without a key ring that holds all the flashcards together.

Additional comments: My children have been using Friendly Defenders for years and have enjoyed them very much (and learned a lot in the process). My eight-year-old son in particular, really enjoyed the Friendly Defenders quiz on the website . There are two levels of quizzes and those who score well on them can go on to print out a beautiful "Junior Apologist Award" certificate. While the quizzes were too tough for him at first, he was inspired to more studying (using the Friendly Defenders Cards and the Catholic Bible Quiz Cards (I required him study 20 minutes before each attempt) until he earned his certificates. I thought these quizzes were a great bonus and very motivating for kids who love computers.

I just noticed that the Beginning Apologetics book that Michaela recommended is also reviewed on the Love 2 Learn site.

A Philadelphia Catholic in King James's Court is a book my boys have enjoyed AND learned from.
Editorial Reviews
Publisher Comments
"From stickball played on the Philadelphia blacktop to working the tobacco fields of rural Kentucky, Kennedy takes us on a wonderful ride. He introduces us to the sublime joys found in a slower pace of life and the profound truths of the Christian faith found in the Bible." -- Matthew Pinto President, Envoy magazine
National Catholic Register, August 14, 1999
"Besides being an intriguing tale, it is an instant course in apologetics....It would be unfair to give the final outcome of this tale. Evil pits all its strength against Michael. Grace inspires and empowers him. Moments of suspense and horror lead up to a climax not devoid of subtle humor. We are left applauding the hero of the piece, wondering, and wishing for more."
God bless!
