I am strongly considering buying the small deluxe set bible in felt from felt source as an aid to my nearly 6 yo son for K at home in september. There is a lot of bible reading (that I have to do) and then he has to tell me what was said in his words and draw a picture of it as well in his own words and with his own hands. (I would not be substituting the felt figures for his drawing but using it as an aid to keep his focus. When I read to him from the bible now I seem to lose his focus.
I am wrangling over it because it is (are you sitting down?)
$150.00!!! and I have to cut out all the figures too!!!!
here is the link
felt source
do you think this would be a wise purchase?
We have the money set aside but still I want to be wise and not waste it . Perhaps you have a different suggestion, maybe just as expensive but it would be a superior product? Thank you!

WOW, that looks awesome! Please let me know how you like it because I might want to get it too! I think the kids would really be engaged with that and could even act out the scenes for Daddy when he gets home!!!

When my kids were that age I purchased the felt figures that you linked (I want to say I only spent like $20, though).
I have two comments.
THEY. WERE. HORRIBLE. TO. CUT. OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!
My hand hurt for days and some of the pieces were so small that it was almost impossible.
The second comment was that, even after getting them all cut out we rarely used them. There were so many pieces that it was hard to find them all for each bible story or keep track of them. And, it just didn't seem to keep their attention like I envisioned.
On a positive note, whenever my 6yo gets into our storage area he goes straight for these and has them spread out all over and has had fun creating his own pictures/stories.
I guess I would recommend getting a small set or maybe a used one before you invest a huge amount of $$$$$.

thank you! My husband I'm sure will be delighted with your response, Betsy. I imagined they would be horrible to cut out. Maybe a small set would be good or even
here is what I could find as a new testament/catholic only alternative and MUCH less expensive
from catholic company
but my son LOVES Moses and the parting of the red sea and all of that, etc. etc. well maybe coloring pages, hmmmm....

If you have a set of basic patterns (and even if you don't these are easy to find online), why don't you consider purchasing a good stash of felt, a good pair of fiskars scissors, and hiring a teen to cut them out of the patterns for you?
There are many teens that would LOVE a paying summer job, and you could offer 50 bucks and I GUARANTEE you'd have some teens knocking on your door. Then you've saved $100, have your Bible felt characters, and a teen has a little spending cash!
Just a thought!

I completely second what Betsy said. We had the same experience here. However, Betty Lukens makes some felt quiet books that I made for my children and they got a LOT of use. The Bible felt books were especially good. The house/family one had too many small pieces.
I strongly recommend the Bible felt quiet books, and strongly suggest you not spend the money on the full Bible felt set.

Betty Lukens activity felt books
We had the Old Testament and Bible Stories. The Life of Jesus looks good, also. These are great for car rides, waiting rooms, and any time you needs quiet activity.

Also be sure you are actually "losing his focus". I've found that often my boys look like they're drifting away or not paying attention but if you ask some questions they're obviously listening intently.. they just need to be more active than sitting quietly keeping their eyes on you.
I think someone's mentioned before doing reading during a meal or a snack time.. so that the kids are contained and busy and can listen too.

I second what Jodie said about making sure he really isn't listenting, and I will add that I believe that 6 is pretty young for these kind of narrations. Charlotte Mason didn't recommend starting narration that young.
From my own experiences my boys don't start formal narration before 6.5 when I usually start them in 1st grade.
Also, most my boys listen MUCH better when they have their hands busy. It seems very counterintutive to have them playing with some thinking putty or blocks, however, they always gave better narrations when doing this.
Lastly, really try to relax. We all want our children to love and understand the Faith. You have a long educational road ahead of you and right now your son needs to be busy being out side and playing in nature!!!!
