Help! My ds will be a senior at our local Catholic HIghschool next year. It has been a good experience for him, but next year, for Religion, he has a teacher we're really not so sure about. He will be studying the Gospels. My dh and I are thinking of a way to "shore him up" for this. I am looking for a good book about the Gospels with good Catholic content, that isn't going to cause him to feel like he is being punished by having to do more "school" outside of "school" if you KWIM.
Anything come to mind?

First book that comes to my mind is Didache's Understanding the Scriptures, absolutely wonderful, my dd loved it. To make him feel less 'schooly' read the chapters aloud with you and dh and discuss them. This is how I use the Introduction to Catholicism with my reluctant to write teen. I read a part, he narrates, then at the end he orally answers the questions. Oh and the conversations about all issues of Faith this has engendered is so precious, not to be replaced.

I wonder if he could read the Gospels from the individual Ignatius Press RSV Catholic Study Bible Guides? Like this one for the Gospel of Mark? I'm thinking he'll have to read the Gospels anyway for his class, and the notes in these guides should provided an antidote for any off-base comments from the teacher and give him necessary "back-up" if he wants to discuss any topic with her.
I totally agree with Erin. I love the Didache book, but I just wonder how much extra reading he'll have time for? I do like her idea of reading the chapters as a family and discussing them.

If you just read the chapter, narrated and answered it would take no more than an hour. Of course our lessons take longer as Dominic asks such difficult questions, some of which I write down to ask our camp chaplain as I have no idea, or we get out the CCC and try to find the answers, which then of course take us on other tangents. I've learnt lots. I'm looking forward to doing the Scriptures with him next.

I have all of these and think that's such a terrific recommendation! My dd is using these to read through the Gospels. They are easy to read, not too intimidating because it's a small booklet (which works great for a teen!!). I did want to mention that Ignatius does offer a bound edition that contains all of the New Testament study guides now.
The commentaries in this series are quite nice.

I had thought of the Didache Scripture book too. Though it is heavily salvation history and OT. I think the gospel studies from Ignatius that Jen mentioned are a great fit - easy to read and could be seen more as a daily bible study verses extra school work. But they definitely would provide a sound foundation of the gospels.
