I was wondering if you all could give me some recommendations on your favorite Catholic books. I am looking for books that will help build my faith and help me have a closer relationship with God. Also, any books you find inspirational or a particularly good read. Thanks!

What a great question!
My favorite Catholic books are:
Great Wives and Mothers by Hugh Francis Blunt
I Believe in Love by Jean C.J. d'Elbee
Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales
Life of Christ by Fulton J. Sheen
My Daily Bread by Fr. Anthony Paone
Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean Baptiste Saint-Jure and Bl. Claude de la Colombière
The World's First Love: Mary, Mother of God by Fulton J. Sheen
A Year with the Saints: A Virtue for Every Month of the Year
Thanks to my pastor, I have read several quotes from Divine Intimacy and hope to eventually own a copy of this book. Based on the quotes, I think that it would also qualify as a favorite.

In addition to Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence and Introduction to the Devout Life, I love also:
Humility of Heart by Fr. Cajetan de Bergamo
The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis
Mother of the Redeemer by John Paul II
Any good books about the lives of saints, especially those by Louis de Wohl. I am currently reading The Blessed Friend of Youth: St. John Boscoby Neil Boyton, which is OOP, and it is truly inspirational!
And my favorite books of the Bible:
The Gospel of John
The Psalms
St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians
I seem to recall someone here on 4Real posting about reading different kinds of books to enrich your spiritual life. One kind might be biographies of saints, another kind is inspirational writing, another maybe was the Bible itself, and the fourth might have been apologetic/catechetical reading, like the Catechism or books by apologists like Dr. Scott Hahn. At least, it was something like that . I thought that was a very good idea...sort of something for the heart, something for the brain, something for the soul, and something to equip you to help others in the knowledge of the Faith.

That was Maria von Trapp's suggestion from Around the Year with the Trapp Family for a reading plan for Lent: in choosing our reading for Lent. She proposed three layers:
1) Something for the mind, to grow in the knowledge of God and the Faith
2) Something for the soul, spiritual reading for nourishment
3) Something for the heart, inspiring biographies of saints and holy people

I've always loved that recommendation of Maria von Trapp's - something to nurture the mind, the soul and the heart!

You're welcome! It was fresh in my mind because I just quoted it in my article for "Mater et Magistra".

It is really good. I did a post of all the books by Maria von Trapp. You would really enjoy them all...and they all have a good spiritual foundation -- living Faith.
Trapp Family Memories
This blog is also the book, "Around the Year with the Trapp Family".

A few of my all-time favorites:
Already mentioned: I Believe in Love
Books by Jacques Philippe, available from Scepter Press. These are very small, but super, super wonderful books.
In Conversation with God series, meditations for every day, linked with the Missal and Lectionary.
I really love to read St. Josemaria's writings. His books are usually small thoughts to chew on and pray throughout the day.
And Call Him Father by Edward G. Maristany is a powerful little booklet that sums up the Divine Filiation -- we are sons and daughters of God, and what that means to us. From there, I'm reading other books on the subject...but that's another post, I guess.

Oh this is wonderful !!! I am writing these titles down and check if Chapters carries them or if the library may have them .Sadly our library does not have many Catholic books .
I so loved Maria Von Trapp's book about thier family . I laughed so much with her stories and I cried when her dh became ill etc. she inspired me that when we too find our country property we will place a cross in the woods I wish we had a live in priest like they did
I also read every single morning after the mass readings , Mother Teresa's day book a reading for everyday .It is titled The Joy in Loving . her readings are very simple not complicated and always help me in my journey .

The Journey Toward God
Description from the website:
Quote:
The desire to know God is the great human hunger. This book teaches readers how to open to God in prayer, how to respond to God and how to grow into a deeper union with Him. Uniquely, the book draws from Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox writers, opening readers to an appreciation for Christian unity. |

I have this book and really enjoy it. I always glean something new each time I pick it up.
