What do people do with their children for St. Valentine's? My oldest is only 3 and I don't think we did anything at all the last two years. Are there good story books with the story of St. Valentine? Craft ideas? Food/baking ideas? Gift ideas? Yes gifts? No gifts?
What love to hear whatever you have to offer!

I sometimes get little gifts.. I think one year we got cheap coffee mugs with hearts on them.. or a little stuffed animal.. oh but I always get them each a box of conversation hearts.. they like that and it doesn't break the bank
and we make goodies.. one of my favorites is cranberry orange scones (we use a heart cookie cutter)
This year we didn't get sugar cookies made at Christmas so I was thinking doing sugar cookies would be fun.

I posted a bunch of St. Valentine's Day crafts and goodies on my blog this week, along with a book suggestion.
St. Valentine's Day Crafts and Ideas
Here's a link with a coloring page and a printable from Vee. And also this St. Valentine post is one of my favorites with some crafts using a St. Valentine holy card.
I'm also working on making some religious Valentines for my kids to give out at our preschool co-op. I think I'll also make some heart shaped cookies with my kids!

We have decorated sugar cookie hearts and read the book by Robert Sabuda. We have also enjoyed this book and I thought this year we might try making Valentine's Garlands.

We usually bake and make our own Valentines for our home school group exchange. We'll get pretty scrap book paper or red construction paper cut out hearts and each gets to draw or write on them. Then we stick a lollipop on them with a piece of tape.
I also take advantage of most holidays to give them a book. Last year I gave my boys (close to your ds age): How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You by Jane Yolen and this edition of Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney.
As for Saint Valentine we are going to serve up tea and read The Story of Valentine by Wilma Pitchford Hays, suggested as a good living book (I thought we'd try it). Last year we read Saint Valentine by Robert Sabuda.

One year we didn't get our gingerbread house made at Christmas time so we made one for Valentine's Day. It was pretty with all the red, white and pink candies!

My girls make Valentines to hand out to as many people as possible (we try especially to give them to the elderly in our church). They take hearts (either we cut them out or I buy them pre-cut) and decorate them with ribbon, sitckers, glitter glue, etc and my oldest writes on them. Last year I picked out a Bible verse about love for her to write on them. This year she is writing "God loves you!" on one side and "And we love you too!" on the other side. I really try to drive home God's love to my children and everyone else with this feast :)

Nice suggestions for cute picture books in this old thread. Most aren't religious, but themes of friendship and love.

What did you think of this book? I bought this used, and was disappointed, because there was no religion mentioned. He wasn't even mentioned as a priest. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the story of a SAINT that I wanted.
I did enjoy adding Saint Valentine by Ann Tompert to our Valentine reading. Some of the story overlapped Robert Sabuda's, but I also like that one story brought in the crocus, and Tompert's brought in the flowering almond tree. I like having herbal/floral connections for feast days.
Edited to Add: Tompert's isn't exactly living, more narrative in style, but still enjoyable.

I have to admit I wasn't disappointed with the book. As the story begins there are several times he is mentioned as "kindly priest" or "old priest", when he is first introduced she describes him wearing a "chain around his ample waist hung a small gold cross", reference to Christians and Rome's attitude towards them is emphasized, constant talk about the "Book" which talks about the "one true God" is seen as very important, and there are also scenes when he is praying or talks about prayinge for others, I also enjoyed Smoky the pigeon, and of course his last letter speaking of the "miracle" to the blind girl. (did I mentioned I also enjoyed talk of his garden and him being so wise )
I guess what I'm trying to say is that there was plenty of religous symbolism for me to have enjoyed the book. I have to admit it was not short or quick narrative "about his life and why he is a saint" as my oldest put it. But more of a living book about the time period St. Valentine lived in and the lives he touched. (I actually thought about holding off in reading until next year when we will be covering Ancients, but the kids had already seen the book.)
When we read Robert Sabuda's book last year it was done in one sitting around our tea time along with this rendition of Love is.... This year we had to spread our story several pages every morning this week (we actually read the last of it today) over pink bagels.
I'll have to get the Ann Tompert book for next year.

Jenny, I'll look at it again. I kept waffling over whether it was a keeper or not. Thanks for your review! That is a good point that it gives a flavor of the culture.
I had enjoyed her Pilgrim's Christmas after I read the Valentine book, and was rethinking. So that's why I asked.

We read it too for the first time this year. We enjoyed it, particularly the boys. It may have helped that they already had a context in which to frame St. Valentine - so they knew he was a priest, they knew he died a Martyr, they knew he cured the blind girl. With the exception of his martyrdom, the other aspects were represented and we liked how they were woven into the story (though there certainly could have been more emphasis on the faith of St. Valentine). We greatly enjoyed the historical aspect of the story in detailing early Roman life.
I would agree with you, Jenn, that the faith didn't hold as prominent a place as in some other books, but it wasn't lost entirely as Jenny mentioned, and we enjoyed the writing overall and the historical representation especially.

What's everyone doing next week? We have a couple different co-ops and each were planning some time for Valentines activities. Looking for new ideas.

it's not really anything new but my kids got a lot of valentine's day cards and such for crafts from a relative at Christmas.. and I thought we could decorate bags and use them as mailboxes for the kids to make valentines for each other.. dh and I too.. which will work great for the little bits of things I get them.. just some chocolates and conversation hearts.

We are going to make a "who loves you heart" - I will cut out a big construction paper heart (or maybe two) and they will write (or suggest and I'll write for my little ones) who loves them. I'll lead them to answer "God" first, if they don't suggest that one right away, and it will be big and in the center of the heart. Then we'll think of people in our lives who love us and write them in too.
I love the idea of "God loves you" Valentines! So sweet!
