I know there are many sites online that have art inspired by the Bible and I am wondering if there is anywhere that you could look at art based on the readings for the liturgical year. Wouldn't it be great if someone put paintings based on particular readings in order with the liturgical year? It would be so wonderful to just be able to pull them up each day (if there was art for that particular day) to show the children when we do readings! Dreaming, maybe.

There is a book like that - off the top of my head can't think of it - but a search should reveal that. I'll check when I have a little more time. Or I'm betting someone knows it off the top of her head.

I can't think of the book you are referring to, Mary, unless it's a saints book? I know of several saint books, but not based on the liturgical readings.

I do this at certain times of the year, and have a plan to do it for most of the liturgical year.

I think basing on most of the Sundays would be a good basis, so to have an image for the week. This would only change if there was a Solemnity or feast or special saint during the week.

I use Web Gallery of Art, Biblical Art and Art related to John's Gospel as a starting point.

I do find some of the Gospel that don't have "action" are harder to portray.

I was just coming over to suggest this book --

Saints: A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi.

Each day of the liturgical year is depicted with a piece of art chosen to represent a saint from the calendar that day. We enjoy looking at the artwork and the short description in this book each day as part of our Morning Basket routine. I do feel like it is prudent to warn you that there are some graphic images (not gratuitously so), particularly of the martyrs - just wanted to mention that.

The short blurb associated with each piece of art each day is indeed, very short. You could certainly flesh that out more. We enjoy studying the art (symbolism, color choice, etc) chosen to portray the day of the liturgical year, with a particular interest in Marian art because we really enjoy looking for hidden symbolism in paintings of Our Lady.
