Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm teaching a co-op class on the Fruits and Gifts of the Holy Spirit so I'm trying to learn about them for myself.

~Fruits are seeds that are planted by God in everyone that we can grow if we want to; correct?

~Gifts are things freely given by God but not given to all people right? Does that mean that I can't do anything to grow in piety or knowledge?? I'm confused there.

~Catholics have more Fruits of the HS then Protestants. Where did the extra 3 Fruits come from??

Thanks!

I remember asking these same questions when in formation and they still pop up ! not to add more to your plate but my biggest strugle was with the Graces lol that one still stumps me at times.
I see fruit as something that will grow and is the natural God given produce when we use our gifts correctly and look after our gifts our fruit will be nutured and gorw and in turn reproduce etc.
I use the example of my children are my fruit . They have all gorwn into wonderful fruitful human beings giving wherever they go our gifts help us nuture that fruit .
Yes we all are given gifts but try hard not to make the gifts the focus but the giver .many of us may also recieve the same gift but we are asked to use those same gifts in different ways etc. depending on our vocation place in life etc.
I can't comment on the whole protestant / catholic thing as it stumps me to much I'd go to a good priest for that one

The moral life of Christians is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspirations. CCC 1830

The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. CCC 1832

The tradition of the Church lists 12 (charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity) because the Latin Vulgate listed 12. Current translations only list 9.

Found it online: Galations 5:22-23

Also some good info and the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit (scroll down).

Sometimes Wikipedia has good articles. This one on the gifts of the Holy Spirit is clear and thorough. Looks like it was written by a Catholic.
