Was wondering whether anyone knows anything about receiving sacraments in China. Dh might be relocated there but we were concerned about whether we could attend a valid Mass, receive sacraments from a valid priest etc etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Genevieve,
I support the Cardinal Kung foundation. They would have all the up to date info on the Church situation in China. The founder's uncle was Cardinal Kung who suffered for years in a Communist prison and was actually named a Cardinal by JP11 while still in captivity.
I remember reading that Cardinal McCarrick (sp?) bishop in MD somewhere, had to celebrate his Mass privately in his room as he could not concelebrate with the Patriotic Church priests. Not sure what the situation is now though.

An interesting aside...the Latin Mass is the Mass recognized by the Chinese Gov't, while Mass in the vernacular is the "underground" Mass.

MacBeth, that is interesting! I found this link to explain why.
Maddie, Gwen, thank you for pointing me to other sources of information on the situation in China. There is much to consider. Whether CPCA is indeed schismatic. Why do articles say Vatican has not formally declared CPCA schimatic yet at the same time mentioned that Pope Pius XII has? To attend an "underground" Mass would be illegal, and I'm not sure I want to put my children in such a seemingly dangerous position. Or am I wrong? *sigh* I'm starting to appreciate religious freedom in America more and more.

Erin,
The transfer fell through but we did managed a trip to China this past summer. It has changed a lot since my last visit ten years ago. You wouldn't have guessed that Shanghai didn't have many modern conveniences back then. Let me know if I can help with the study since I'm Chinese who grew up in Singapore.

I doubt that you could get to an underground Mass as it would endanger the lives of all the faithful Catholics who are still being martyred for being faithful to the Holy Father. You might be able to get in and out of Hong Kong whose Catholic church has not been forced underground yet, at least.
The other place I would check would be for Masses offered at embassies for embassy employees - but don't know if they would be using schismatic priests or not. We support the Cardinal Kung foundation as well - the problem, as far as I know, still exists and priests and laymen continue to be arrested for remaining with the underground church.

By the grace of God, our family will be visiting the Cardinal Kung Foundation this upcoming Saturday and Joseph Kung, Cardinal Kung's nephew, will be preparing a meal for a large group of us. How do you know about the foundation? Have you ever visited?

WOW! What a wonderful opportunity for your family. Joseph Kung is a tireless soul, God bless him! The sufferings of the Chinese people is unimaginable.
No, I have never met him, I did see him at a h/s conference where I first heard of his ministry and try to send $ when I can.
My interset in the Chinese was sparked by a friend whose parents escaped China while she was still an infant so they could raise her openly in the Faith. Before baby #3, I did some pro-life work where I learned about the horrors of China's Draconian measures to reduce their population from 1.2 billion to 600 million by 2050. Unbelievably evil, unspeakable crimes are committed against these women and children and the world hardly blinks an eye.  China's one-child policy
I hope you'll share with us your visit with Joseph Kung, what a privilage!

Yes Maddie, you are right - what a privilege! We had a wonderful, wonderful time. Joseph & his wife, Agnes, are truly the most gracious host & hostess and fed us the most delicious chinese food. We were joined by 3 other families and several of friars included Helen's brother (we missed you Helen!). One of the friars said Mass then after lunch Joseph & Agnes entertained us with stories from Cardinal Kung's life. Joseph's sister and brother-in-law were also in attendance. Both had spent 24 years in hard-labor camp. While in camp they were able to secretly be married! What a blessing to be in the presence of two saints! We were there for 5 hours and had to drag ourselves alway. Agnes (who I guess is in her late 50s) never seemed to tire and literally went from one story to the next.
If anyone is interested in making a contribution to this most worthy cause, please go to the website. They have a program where you are able to sponsor a seminarian or a novice. Also they have begun offering Mass cards for $10. $10 U.S. dollars means a whole lot to the Underground Church.
Just as a side note, Agnes explained that one should not attend the Patriotic Association church while in China. It is not a mortal sin to do so, however it is also not a mortal sin to miss Mass while in China either. Obviously it is an extremely difficult situation. One story we heard might help illustrate the severity of what's going on in China. Bishop Kung, upon his arrival in CT, went immediately to the hospital so that the the state of his health could be determined. (He had lived on 3 oz. rice/day for over 30 years yet managed to live until 98 years of age!) A priest who was visiting the hospital overheard that there was a Bishop in the hospital that could not speak English. This priest could speak french and since Cardinal Kung had been educated by French Jesuits he also knew french. Immediately after the priest introduced himself, Bishop Kung asked him if he could hear his confession as the Bishop hadn't been to confession in over 30 years!
Thank God for the religious freedoms we presently have in our country. Our Lady of China, pray for us and for the Underground Church in China.
