it's official: the Mary from our decades-old olivewood Nativity set has gone AWOL. I kept hoping she'd show up in another box, but as Christmas Eve approaches I'm thinking I'd better come up with plan B so Joseph doesn't look like a single father. any ideas on a stand-in from all you crafty moms out there?
otherwise, I gotta tell you (and please don't be offended, anyone), I think I'm about to dress up a shepherd ...

That's cute . How about taking a block the size of your set and decaling/decoupaging a print out of Mary. I've been eyeing something like this all season. Just haven't had the time.
And Catholic Icing has all of these additional ideas too.

Corn husk doll? (Oops, nevermind...I just read your location! )
I don't know the size/scale of your Nativity set...mine is pretty small (also olive wood...better check it!) and so I could not use one of dd's dolls as a sub.
Could one of your children make a clay Mary for this year? (You'd have to go to a craft store for the clay...and get some blue felt for a cloak...) I've been looking around, thinking what I would do were I you, and I think I'd draft dd to make a Blessed Mother from air-drying clay.

oh wow, I just fell in love with Catholic Icing! why had I not seen that before?
thanks so much for the suggestions! the kids are battling a nasty head cold so I'm not sure how much craft help I can reasonably expect from them. but we'll see ...
by the way, we're also missing a box of Christmas books, so maybe Mary snuck off to catch up on her reading.

Nancy, you hit the jackpot! I hadn't thought of DD's dolls, because the set is pretty small and she's not really a doll child anyway. but then I thought of these nun nesting dolls from her Mass kit. the middle doll is just the right scale! and, while the nun theme doesn't quite fit with the "just gave birth" theme, she is carrying a Bible and rosary. so maybe not perfect, but a lot closer than the wooden penguin who was my next choice. thanks for helping me think outside the box. and Jenny, next year, I'm making those nativity blocks ahead of time.

Really it kind of does because both are virgins with vows to God.
I think it's a good pick.
A wooden penguin? Seriously?

excellent, Michelle. thanks. I'll explain it that way to DH.
and the penguin didn't look half bad, once it was wrapped in a white and blue shawl. (ah, the curse of the non-crafty mom ...)
if I could figure out how to download and post pictures, I'd share.
