Does anyone have a list of saints that go along with particular virtues, sort of like the Little Flowers topics?
I am going to use P.A.C.E. as part of my 9 and 10 yo's RE this year and want to add in one saint for each month's virtue that we study. I only have the old version, which does not include saints. I looked through my dd's LF books for some help but I'd like to include more male saints also for my ds, who especially needs to read about some heroes this year!
The particular virtues in PACE are:
self-discipline
work
perseverance
faith/trust
compassion
friendship
courage
loyalty
responsibility
honesty
I guess if someone has the new version of PACE and wanted to list the saints in it that'd be great but I wasn't sure about copyright issues. I just don't want to pay for an entire new book when I think the only difference is the saints.
Thanks,
karen

Karen,
I really enjoy A Year with the Saints. The book is divided up into 12 months, with each month focusing on a particular virtue. Each day of the month has a writing from a saint that embodies that virtue. I think it might work well with what you're trying to do.
The Little Flowers series is based on Father Lasance's Catholic Girls Guide. There is also A Young Man's Guide. Both are written more to a 12+ age group, but they're both so lovely and wonderful I thought I'd suggest them. It's possible you can find some wonderful saints and material in each of these books, and then save them for more reading when the kids are older.

Helen and I figured out that an older book I have entitled Spiritual Diary: Selected Sayings and Examples of Saints is the same book. The twelve virtues covered are:
Perfection
Humility
Mortification
Patience
Meekness
Obedience
Simplicity
Diligence
Prayer
Confidence
Charity
Union
Of all my saint books, I don't really have much that list by virtue, just some that give a little thought at the end of what example we can learn from the certain saint.

I looked at the book Jen mentioned A Year with the Saints, and it does indeed list those exact virtues that Jenn lists from her book. Most of that doesn't really match up with the ones I'm doing, and I wasn't really looking for a book with just a few pages on each saint anyway. I'd like to use something like a Vision book biography for each month and have it tie in with the virtue we are studying. So far on my own I've come up with
work - St. Benedict
perseverance - St. Catherine Laboure
faith- St. Francis
compassion - Blessed Mother Theresa
but I still need ones for friendship, loyalty , responsibility and honesty (I ended up dropping courage, not b/c it's not important but b/c I only have 9 four week periods; we'll do it next year. I'll probably use St. Maximilian Kolbe for courage!)
any ideas?

Loyalty could be St. Thomas More or Edmund Campion
For friendship, I keep thinking of Benedict and Scholastica. I know they were siblings, but their friendship was deeper than just brother and sister.
Oh, and of course, St. Thomas More would be good for honesty as well.

A friend introduced me to this book at our Marian Maidens' meeting this summer. I'm soooo enjoying it!

Friendship -
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (many speak of what a wonderful and devoted friend Blessed Pier Giorgio was...in fact, the many images we have of this Blessed he is among his friends.)
The children of Fatima (such dear friends - they make sense here)
Loyalty -
St. Athanasius (loyal to Church teaching and the defender of the Holy Eucharist)
St. Edmund Campion (so loyal to the Church that he became a martyr for the faith.)
Responsibility -
St. John Bosco (felt keenly the responsibility of the boys under his care)
St. Pius X (really wanted only to remain a country priest, but accepted other jobs/appointments within the Church out of his sense of responsibility to Holy Mother Church)
Honesty -
St. Catherine of Sienna (I can't help it, when I think of honesty, I think of St. Catherine of Sienna, one of my favorite, call 'em like she sees 'em saints)
The Cure' of Ars (I always think of the special grace given the Cure' in the confessional, his ability to see souls as they were, a true supernatural honesty)

I started my post above a long time ago...so good to see that Lindsay and I have the same thoughts on a couple of saints!!!! Didn't mean to steal your thunder, Lindsay!
Also, thought I'd mention that all of the saints mentioned have a variety of books - Vision, MFW, Daughters of St. Paul, in and out of print readers - available so you could use them as you are hoping to with your PACE program.
Do you have Reading the Saints: Lists of Catholic Books by Janet McKenzie? (I'd link but it seems Amazon is down right now.) It is my hands-down-go-to reference for finding books about saints, both in and out of print! If your library has it, you might borrow it to help you build more of a booklist.

For courage... Fr. Marquette would also be a great one.
Goodness- he was brave going to all the Indians. Even war hatchets flying past his head did not stop him!

All saints practiced each of those virtues. Rather than pairing up the virtues for your dc, I would pick a saint whose feast day is during the month and read a biography asking my dc to tell how they practiced the virtue. Great for critical thinking and more natural than linking a saint who practiced the virtue in an extraordinary way.

Jen, these are great ideas! and, as a bonus, I already have books on several of them!
I know the saints displayed many virtues and I'm not trying pigeonhole them, but I just wanted to really represent that particular virtue strongly. We already read about various saints when their feast days come up, but I wanted one longer book for each month.
And yes, Melinda, Fr. Marquette would be a great one for courage when we get to it next year!

You might also want to check out The Loyola Kids Book of Saints. It splits the stories up in these types of categories. It's really nice!
