I was just wondering if any of you have been allowed to have your children receive Confirmation at a much earlier age than your parish normally does it? Did the hoops differ? What was your experience?
My parish does Confirmation in 8th grade, but I'm thinking about asking when my oldest daughter, who is finishing first grade and making her FHE this June, hits third or fourth grade.

I'd like the answer too, please. Our 13-yo is being confirmed in two days, and 8-yo (who's receiving FHE in a week) and 11-yo want to know if they could be confirmed earlier. I told 11-yo to go ask Father next time we see him.

I would be happy with 8th grade. The policy here (Seattle) is age 16 AND a junior in high school.

Here it's mostly high school {or college} but there is a parish that does FHC and Confirmation together in 2nd grade.

I would love to get my son, age 9, confirmed ASAP. It seems so silly to me to wait for those graces when I can see that he could use them NOW!

I agree with you LeeAnn! It's 11th grade here too. I haven't heard of any exceptions, but I know I'll be wanting to ask too.

I've just heard that rather than the every 2 years that they've been doing confirmation here for the 6th and 7th graders.. we've been told it'll be another 3 yrs before it'll happen (this fall is one of the years we're supposed to have)
Our church is supposed to be trying to talk with them and seeing if that's really what was meant of if they just meant they'd have to be an extra year after this year (so a 3 year span rather than 2 yr) or just what is going on.
I have to say I'm NOT happy.. these kids have been expecting to recieve Confirmation and for them to find out maybe 6 months beforehand that.. ooops you have to wait another 3 yrs??? and then you have 5 years of kids who haven't recieved it??? anyway.. they will be hearing about it if that's what it turns out to be.. because that's just wrong to prevent these kids from recieving a sacrament like that.. not because they are changing the age to recieve it but because they can't fit it into their schedule
Hopefully we can at least work out something like maybe combining for the Sacrament with the next closest parish so that our kids can recieve about as often as has been usual.. just alternating who has to travel for it or something.

At our parish, the children are confirmed at the same Mass as they receive their FHC. Our pastor said this is the original order of the sacraments of initiation. This is in second grade. No hoops to jump through at all. I love it.
Being a military family, we have been to dioceses/parishes where they made it difficult for my older children to be confirmed since you might not be there long enough to jump the hoops and then you move cross country to a whole new set of hoops.
I agree - I want my children to get those graces early.

We have the same situation as Mary, except now the Bishop does the Confirmations a few days earlier than FHC. At first, I was concerned about early Confirmation, just because it was different from what I was used too. (I was Confirmed in 8th grade.) I didn't think a child could understand Confirmation at a young age. A very wise priest said, "Did you?" (Well, not really!) He also said children need the grace of the sacrament of Confirmation before they hit adolescence! I thought that was a great explanation and now I am fine with my children being Confirmed early.
My only struggle this year, when my ds was Confirmed, was finding materials to use to teach him. Most of what is available is written for older children.
My big issue now is that the children are Confirmed and recieve FHC in 2nd grade, but don't make their First Confession until 4th! I always take my kids early, before FHC, and Father never says we can't. I guess it's just an old policy around here that really needs to be changed.
