Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I don't suppose any one has written any lesson plans for using this book in a group setting? I am thinking about using this for our 1st through 5th graders...but trying to figure HOW. I love this book, it's so beautiful and so orthodox and in the hands of a teacher who knows their faith well, it would be a great spine for a year-long study. But...most of my catechists need more help than that, don't know their faith very well (a few of them) and are busy moms who just need a lesson plan in front of them to help them get the class taught. Any ideas?

LeeAnn,

When the Inos Biffi catechism books first came out individually:

The Apostles' Creed
The Sacraments
The Ten Commandments
Prayer

members on the CCM yahoo group talked about them, and incorporated them into religious studies, so you might find ideas in the archives. Also, Mater Amabilis and I think Real Learning incorporated them into their book lists. It's not exactly what you're looking for, but a lead.

I agree, especially with his other books on the Liturgical Year that a whole curriculum could use the Biffi books as a spine. Just would take a bit of planning....

I am planning to use it as my spine next year, but I'm afraid that I don't have a whole lot planned beyond reading through it. I did take Jen's (MackFam)Angel Food/Baltimore Catechism Spreadsheet and modify it to fit with the Biffi book, but that is as far as I've gotten. I do love how it is organized just like the "real" catechism!

Thank you for the responses! I am over the moon...I've found a new bilingual RE program that is basic, orthodox and perfect for our parish. I will continue to use Biffi's book as a resource for my first communion class, but thankfully won't have to try and write lesson plans for all the grades. Thanks again!

I love all the Biffi books --I just wish this one came as a hardcover like the others. I would LOVE to see lesson plans for it!

Bumping this very old thread. Who uses Illustrated Catechism by Biffi, and for what ages? Has anyone broken it down into lessons?

I can tell you how I've planned to use it with my current 2nd grader. I have it organized to read together 2 chapters a week, and on those days I made a copy work page with the title of the chapter (in most cases) and a place to illustrate. I plan to put them together in a FHC notebook and will end up with The Lord's Prayer, The Ten Commandments, etc... when all is said and done.

This is in addition to using the FHC catechism, and the sections are very brief but a nice supplement. I figure he can also use the images in the book for inspiration is illustrating himself, if he chooses. He is my artistic one and loves to draw.

I use it as a spine for my weekly FHC class, mostly the Creed and Sacraments sections. We make a little "faith book" -- using those Hygloss blank books that you can get from Dick Blick -- with copywork and illustrations. For this coming Sunday, for example (our first full class period), we will:

1. Say our morning prayers and look at the liturgical calendar.

2. Practice the whole Apostles' Creed. I've written it out on pieces of shirt cardboard, and I'll have kids come up and hold them as we say each piece.

3. Look just at the first card, which says, "I believe in God." This will be our copywork for the day. If we believe in God . . . well, who *is* God? Introduce the Trinity -- basically I just want them to get the words "One God/Three Persons" stuck in their minds. I will draw the triangular diagram of the Trinity .

4. They will decorate the covers of their books: Copy "I believe in God" and draw the triangle diagram. So "I believe in God" will be the title of their book and the theme of the whole year -- everything else we study will point to that one statement.

5. Clean-up, closing prayers.

This will be pretty much our weekly MO. We'll look at a part of the Creed (I'll show them the illustrations in the Biffi book) and talk about it -- I have to retell Biffi's explanations, rather than reading them, as my group is mostly ESL, and they do not have good read-aloud-listening skills. Usually I draw things on the board to illustrate concepts -- often they copy what I've drawn, though they're free to illustrate their page as they please. I'll also pull some copywork from the Catechism, especially as regards God's having made us to know, love, serve Him, etc. I also use Fr. Bliss's My Path to Heaven as a supplement -- for instance, when we're talking about God the Father as Creator of Heaven and Earth, we'll look at the first "lesson" in that book, with the picture of the little boy going through his life. I also like Fr. Bliss for my lessons on original sin. These are good sources of copywork for those weeks.

In the second semester we focus on the sacraments, with the obvious emphases on Confession and Eucharist. Again I use Biffi as a spine, with copywork from the Catechism and My Path to Heaven as a supplement.

So, that's how I use the Biffi -- mostly for the visuals and for a structure for walking through the Creed. Our parish uses Faith and Life, but the pastor has approved my departing from it in my class (though I do reference it as well), so that I can structure it around these two very basic elements.

Sally

I love your plans, Sally! I have a couple of Biffi's other books but not this one. It does seem wonderful for FHC prep. Thanks for sharing!
