Thinking ahead to next month and the summer Ember Days, I wanted to round up the various sources discussed in previous threads for the benefit of any new folks and myself. :D Please suggest any corrections or refinements and I'll edit as needed.
--------
Lent is the annual retreat, Ember Days are the quarterly check-ups; thanksgiving and gratitude the dominant spirit (not penance)
EMBER DAYS FOR 2010
Spring: February 24, 26 & 27
Summer: May 26, 28 & 29
Autumn: September 22, 24 & 25
Winter: December 15, 17 & 18
EMBER DAYS' SPIRITUAL CHARACTERISTICS
Wednesday: reflection & spiritual orientation, dedicated to Mary
Friday: call to conversion & penance
Saturday: thanksgiving for benefits of past quarter, a preview of Easter, renewal of baptismal covenant, also prayers for vocation to priesthood and prayers in thanksgiving for newly ordained priests
BY THE SEASONS
Spring: Wed, Fri & Sat in the week following Ash Wednesday; thanksgiving for rebirth of nature, gift of light (the sun which makes all these other harvests possible)
Summer: Wed, Fri & Sat following Pentecost (also called Whitsunday, the week being called Whitsuntide); thanksgiving for wheat
Autumn: Wed, Fri & Sat following Exaltation of the Holy Cross (also called Holyrood and the week may be called Michaelmas Embertide), must fall after the 3rd Sunday; thanksgiving for grapes
Winter: Wed, Fri & Sat following St. Lucy’s day; thanksgiving for olives (oil)

Whitsuntide (Pentecost/summer) Ember Friday tomorrow, May 28...a day to renew our commitment to ongoing conversion and a spirit of penance...a day to abstain from meat...a day to prepare an act of thanksgiving and gratitude for ember Saturday (5/29).

Wow - thank you! I am a convert and haven't ever heard of Ember Days. I'll have to spend my time learning all I can about them so I will be prepared for the next ones. Thanks again!
