I found a child's Catholic dictionary I wasn't aware of yesterday at a used book sale, and decided to compile a list of Catholic dictionaries and encyclopedias in and out of print, some online.
I own several dictionaries, and like to have comparison. But that's just me.
I made this a sticky, but I'm sure I missed quite a few good recommendations.
Do you have any that aren't listed? Let me know and I'll add them to the list!

You know, I do not own one single Catholic dictionary or encyclopedia. I do not recall ever looking at one even.
So, where to begin?
I think this would be an asset in our home for the children especially, who do not have unlimited computer access to google it quickly... Nice (not too kitchy) pictures are a big plus for our crew.
All girls here ages 6 - almost 14.
Any suggestions?

I have been thinking of your post for a while, Stephanie. I think having a Catholic dictionary is an extension and continuation of how dh and I were raised. We both had dictionaries and encyclopedias at home, and I don't think a day went by when something was discussed at dinner or other conversations that we would "look it up." A dictionary was the beginning, then encyclopedia had expanded.
We also used a Catholic dictionary for understanding or grasping easily a Catholic term that we heard or read. The dictionary was the starting point, and then further reference to expand if needed.

I think where to begin is to foster "Let's find out" or "Let's look it up", and having books is a good first step. I like to have the younger version, but also the adult version. Let your children see you looking things up, too. And if the child's dictionary doesn't have a term, then use the adult one and discuss.
A Catholic Child's Picture Dictionary is very lovely, the pictures are not kitschy.
And since it's in-print, it's probably the best choice for younger children.
I'm partial to Father John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary, but it's not being sold new on Amazon, and it is online in various places.
For one that is pre-Vatican II, Catholic Dictionary by Donald Attwater, reprinted by TAN.
Catholic Dictionary by Peter Stravinskas is a good current one, too.

Jenn, thank you so much for giving my request so much thought. You know, we are such a language and book family...we have so many different kinds of dictionaries in many languages - just not a specific Catholic dictionary.
I was able to find the Fr. Hardon book, but no luck with the children's here in Germany. I did find one by Fr. Lovasik?

Well, that one is just a little paperback. It's not bad, but it's tiny, as it's part of those St. Joseph Picture books series.
I'll keep my eyes open for something in between.

Jenn, here is what is available to me through amazon.de:
::A Child's First Catholic Dictionary
by Richard W. Dyches and Thomas Mustachio, Ave Maria Press, 1994.
This one is available here used for around 20$ ppd. New paperback goes for 14$(at the moment not available)
::A Catholic Child's Picture Dictionary
by Ruth Hannon, illustrated by Ted Chaiko. This is a reprint from a SSPX Press of a 1956 book from Catechetical Guild Educational Society.
Unfortunately not available, although there are other books by the same author that look interesting...???
::My first Catholic Picture Dictionary
by Lawrence Lovasik in the St. Joseph Picture Books.
Also for around 14$.
::Our Sunday Visitor's Catholic Encyclopedia for Children
by Ann Ball and Julianne M. Will.
goes for around 21$ ppd new.

I wouldn't pay that much for Father Lovasik's book. It's only about $3-5 here in the States, and used copies are abundant for just a few cents. I'll try and find one for you if I can.
You can peek at Ann Ball's book and it's not really organized alphabetically like a traditional encyclopedia.
Bummer. I think the in between book would be the Catholic Picture Dictionary. OOP. Looks like I'll have to prepare a package to Germany again sometime soon.

Hi Jenn,
I have the Maryknoll Sisters' "Crusade: Adventures from our Catholic Heritage" series. It includes a Dictionary/Encyclopedia in several volumes among other sets such as Bible and Saint stories. The Dictionary section begins with Volume 22 and ends with 40.
They were copyright between 1956 and 1957. I noticed another Maryknoll Dictionary at Amazon titled the Catholic Heritage Dictionary, issued more than once, during the 1960s and 70s.

Does anyone know this Encyclopedia?
by Michael Glazier and Monika Hellwig.
I am not considering it at the moment, but am interested if it is something for the future or to recommend at all.

Oh Gwen, Thanks for the reminder! This is the in-between perfect reference! I have this, too. It's hard to find, unfortunately, but a goldmine.
I have the Maryknoll Dictionary and it's an adult reference, but very well-done.

Fr. John Hardon's "Modern Catholic Dictionary" just arrived today. It has everything from common latin expressions to titles of different orders, and, and, and! It will find it's home in the corner of our kitchen bench right next to our current read-a-loud.
Thanks, Jenn, for this recommendation. I am keeping a lookout for an encyclopedia and something for the younger kids.

Oh, you are so thoughtful to come back and follow up! I'm glad you like it! I don't think a week passes without me using mine.

Here is a copy of the vintage Ruth Hannon A Catholic Child's Picture Dictionary that I found in my Catechetical Guild Educational Society search tonight.
I didn't see this thread originally in May since I was with my parents at that time. Very interesting thread...

This is the same one that has been reprinted by Angelus Press. They changed the cover, or it was a later edition they used to print. It's very nice.

Yes, I recognized they were the same book. No one had linked to an original - just the reprints. I'd love an original.
