Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been looking at these at Adoremus Books... they run around $15 for a kit to make a very nice looking banner.

Has anyone purchased one... or made their own?
I think $15 is a little high... but I tend to be on the cheap side in general.

Also- is this something that kids really keep and cherish? Or is it something that you wonder what to do with after awhile?

Looking for opinions...

I am a saver, so we have ours. We don't really do anything with them, though.

Dd's was homemade (through our tiny parish in WV, a true do-it-yourself parish); parents cut out the letters and symbols and the children assembled them.

You could probably do it yourself for less than $15.

Dowel (Michael's) - $1 - $2
Felt yardage (fabric store) - $3 - $5
Assorted felt pieces (Michael's) - $0.25 each, maybe four to six colors
Glue and thread...you probably have them
Sparkly things (if desired, from Michael's or a fabric store) - perhaps $3 plus glue

It would be a good opportunity to discuss liturgical symbols and colors, too....

I posted a link today with directions on making your own banner, along with some lesson plans, games, etc. It's the second idea down Angie gives great directions on making a banner, plus she includes links to lots of sample pictures!

And just for fun, here are my other posts with first communion ideas:
First Communion Cake and Food Ideas
Gift Ideas

I wanted to do a whole post on banners, but no time this year

Thanks for the great links! Looking a them, I feel like maybe I can make a banner, after all. For some reason I envisioned myself cutting out individual grapes and doves with wings and....

A chalice and a cross even I can do.

My 18 year old still has her's on the wall of her room. So, in our case at least, it was a keepsake.

We used felt and fabric paint and it turned out beautiful.

Michele, you're too sweet

Darcee- I love what you said about it being a keepsake. I never thought of it like that! My little brother is making his first communion this Spring. Now you guys have me thinking I should be making him a banner!

Are they the Illuminated Ink ones? They are REALLY nice --worth the money I'd say!

That is a very nice one. I love their stuff... we made their rosary holders one year, and my dd loves the Marian paper doll set. They also have Confirmation banners... did you see the one with the Holy Spirit? Cool.

Ok, today I posted about some first communion cookies I thought y'all might be interested in. They're super easy to make.

Lacy, you are truly amazing. I posted on another First Communion thread a link my sister sent me for the First Communion Cookie Cutter. I didn't know she had found it through you! Wow! You are a wealth of information. Thank you so much!

If I were to guess, I'd say you're talking about this cookie cutter. It is WAY cute, but also $13 so totally out of my price range.

That's it! It is pricey, but I'm hoping to convince my three sisters with future First Communicants to go in on it with me. The cookies could become a family tradition. And look at it this way, with all of my ten kids, I could be making these cookies forever for future grand kids!

My daughter and I just completed her Illuminated Ink FHC banner today and it turned out beautiful! I'm also frugal, but with having number 5 I'm realizing my limitations. It was totally worth the price to have it come straight to my house with everything included. I would have spent a whole day all over town looking for everything needed. The instructions were also great and were a nice little review/lesson all to themself.

Actually, I was so happy with it that I think I'm going to order the grotto kits for my oldest three.

Bethany- you expressed my own thoughts so well... having the kit come to my house all prepared would be worth the cost. And I even have felt and other supplies at home. I have a little time still to decide... we'll see if my energy levels come up for this!

Heads up- another source for a FHC banner is AC Moore.
They have them for $6.99. I bought one with a coupon, so it was around $5 for the kit. It is by no means as nice as the ones on line, but it is a good start (pre-cut letters, a chalice, pre-cut grapes , two doves), and can easily be embellished with what we have at home.

Since my ds was not very enthusiastic about the idea of making one, even after we looked at them on line, I figured this was a good way to go. He will have one for group celebration and won't feel left out, but it won't cost a ton, either.

I just bought a 1st communion banner form Illuminated Ink this past weekend for $10.00. I can't find the one I bought on the website though.
