Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been reading this thread wth interest.
If you had money in your budget for only ONE book about the saints, something that you would like to read to your kids each day as part of your morning prayer routine, which one would it be? I'm hoping for something that is dated, so, on March 17th the entry would be about St. Patrick.
What would you suggest? The children I would be reading this to are 11 years old and younger (down to 2).

Becky, this is so hard for me! You're looking for the text, not pictures, right? Ordinary Form calendar, not 1962 calendar?

We LOVE this one {and the Part II of it as well} Saints for Young Readers Every Day, Vol 1

I find it works for my pre-schooler, and still captivated my nieces and nephews ages 5-17 when they visited. I even get something out of it myself from time to time.

Yes Jennifer, that is correct. Pictures would be okay, and even a positive addition, but they aren't essential.

Thanks for the recommendation dakota. I have it bookmarked. I'm wondering, do the readings for the saints fall on their feast days? I guess that's not essential. I could flip to the reading on a particular feast day. I'm just kind of "type A" about those things.

It has them on their feast day. That's why I love it so much - just open, turn to date, and read.

It is a set of two books though FWIW - noticed when I reread your post you said ONE book. I got mine through BookMooch for the Vol. 1 - they are also on Amazon pretty cheaply for a used copy.

Dakota's recommendation, Saints for Young Readers, is by the Daughters of St. Paul, and I think that's what Mater Amabilis has recommended for certain ages.

Growing up I used the old volumes. Guess I'm a little partial to those pictures, even though they were b&w!

If you want a taste of what the text is, the Daughters have Saint a Day online taken from the book. This is for April.

Thanks for that link Jennifer. It helps.
Paula, I've had your suggestion in my wishlist at Amazon for over a year.
This is a difficult decision!

I also use this book as well. Each page contains a summary of the saints' life as well as a piece of artwork. I like the artwork and think that it is one of the advantages of the book. If you find you want to know more about the saint, you can reference other books on saints (which I am sure most of you probably have more than one ) or check the Internet.

That book, Saints: A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi, is the most used here, but because of the pictures. The text is a bit brief and adult, and we embellish. But the illustrations are worth a thousand words, and the size of the book (thick, but small like a daily missal) is nice to carry around for little hands.

Becky, remember, even if your choice isn't perfect this year by itself.. it's better than not getting any.. and then maybe next year you can add another one or two.
