Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Big topic, I know. Dh & I are teaching post-confirmation RE this year, and I would like to walk them through church history - from the Last Supper to today. My goals are to show them how and why the Catholic church is the real church and give them apologetic ammunition, particulary in regards to the Reformation. I need some goods reads to help me prepare. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Jennifer -
Not a 'read' really, but my moms Bible Study group is using this program from Ascension Press Epic: A Journey Through Church History this year -- and really enjoying it.

2000 years of history in
20 one-hour videos or audios
(Its a whirlwind tour!)

Everyone in the group highly recommends it.

Thanks for the thread I'll be watching for more replies - I'm always looking for more to read on the subject because this program has really sparked my interest in Church history.

Happy New Year!

We used the Church history book from the Didache series as our spine in co-op...excellent book. Easy to read, but long!

So long, in fact, that it took us 3 semesters to get through Vatican II...

I like those Didache series, too. Link

Two other suggestions:

An out-of-print very simple book is The Church's Amazing Story by the Daughters of St. Paul, written to use in high school.

Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church by H.W. Crocker III is an excellent book. The only criticism is the title -- because the Triumph won't happen here on earth but only at the end of time.
