What would be a good book to recommend to someone who is wanting to learn more about Roman Catholicism, but isn't like a "conversion" book? So - not like Rome Sweet Rome or that ilk. they are coming from a Christian background, and want recommends for EOC and Catholic. Other people have suggested things like The Orthodox Church by Ware for the EOC - and i am tring to think of something comparable to suggest for a catholic POV. Not huge. Easy to read and engaging. And more about the Catholic Church itself, then a "defense" of it, like you have in conversion stories, iykwim?
help?
most of my books are of the apologetic/conversion type, and Raising Catholic Kids type....

I bought Catholism for Dummies back before my husband converted. He read it and found it quite helpful.
It's a very good orthodox introduction to what Catholicism is all about. My eleven year old daughter calls it 'user-friendly'.

I highly recommend this book:
Believing In Jesus
It is very straightforward and readable, not preachy or defensive. My husband gave it to me when we started dating (I was an atheist at the time)so I could better understand his faith. And though it is not a conversion book, I ended up converting largely due to this book. It just explained everything so clearly that I couldn't help but accept it!

This isn't a page-turner, but a classic work that covers all the faith basics I would recommend is Faith of Millions by Father John A. O'Brien.
This is what my mother and I give to those who are wanting to know more about our Faith.

This book, The How to Book of the Mass, is a great read -- gives lots of great info in a friendly way. Matt Dubriel died almost a year ago (he was the husband of Amy Welborn) and all proceeds from the book go to a college fund for their little children (so a good cause to-boot!).
I also really like The Faith Explained by Trese as it synthesizes so much of what Catholics believe.
Hope those help a bit.....

I really like On Being Catholic by Tom Howard. The author is a convert (cool story--and he was personally a big part of my conversion) but the book is not very defensive or apologetic.

Yes! Great recommendation!
I was thinking about Scott Hahn's newest book Signs of Life would be a great one. It's not about converstion, but different Catholic customs. It's really really wonderful, easty-to-read, and can really draw one in.

why do catholics do that?
explainations of common questions such as rosary, mary, saints, extra books in the bible, and so forth...
small, quick, easy.
