Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dh is looking for a something to guide the family in discussion after reading the daily readings for mass. He is trying to find a Catholic devotion type book. The impression I am getting is that our devotions are prayers.
We have come up with The Word Among Us (I got the book for Advent and did it once--I just preferred the Conversations with God book), Following Christ through the Gospels (at beginnningCatholic.com) and while I'd love to do Jeff Cavins Bible Study--he wants to open a bible and then have some discussion questions--and it all need to be written out. Are we missing any?

I'd really recommend the NAB Catholic Serendipity Bible. I've used this bible very successfully in bible study groups.

There are three types of questions for, literally, every single passage in the bible.

The first type of questions are conversation starters. They aren't specific to the passage necessarily but they are about the ideas presented there.

The next set of questions are based on the text. What do specific words mean? How does this passage compare to another that discusses the same subject? Who wrote the text? What is the historical context? etc.

The final set of questions are thought provoking. They focus on how the passage is applied to our daily life. Questions are the type to encourage us to question our own thoughts and ideas and challenge us to live as Christ asks us to.

Here's an example. These questions are for John 7:53 - 8:11 (A Woman Caught in Adultery)
Quote:

First set:
  • Describe a time as a child when someone tattled on you.

  • Second Set
  • How is the situation a trap for Jesus? What would the Pharisees accuse Jesus of if he told them to let her go? If he told them to stone her? How does he spring the trap (v.7)?

  • How would the woman just caught in adultery have felt? What was the significance of Jesus' question in verse 10?

  • How does Jesus' response to the woman examplify grace and truth? (1, 17)

  • Third set
  • How does the way Jesus treated this woman help you face your sins?

  • Jesus accepts you "as is." Does that free you to change, or does it support your bad behavior? How so?

  • What can you learn from Jesus about helping a friend who has fallen?

  • There are also multiple choice questions for many of the more common stories of the bible and many ideas for topics to plan a topic based bible study. There are MANY topics to choose from. One year, our group did one on the Passion of the Christ. There are also topical studies on such things as miscarriage, divorce, good stewardship, etc.

Hmm, it's now 1:30 am here and I'd better get to bed. Can you tell how much I like my bible? Whoops, I just noticed the ages of your children. You'd probably have to judiciously edit the questions you discuss as a family. Very easy to do with this bible IMO but you must choose what works best for you.

    Edited to add...
I just realized that my wonderful bible is out of print so it may not be that easy to get. I did stumble on a website with questions based on the Sunday readings that may be what you are looking for.
    Sunday Scripture Study for Catholics
