Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have recently lost a cousin to brain cancer and would like to have a Mass said for him. Our parish is booked up with masses for a year out, I was told. I have heard of of places where you can ask for masses to be said, but sadly I am a bit leery of just googling this or using a place that I do not know of someone having good experience with. Does anyone have any recommendations of where I can have a good, faithful, (preferably traditional or even Latin) Catholic mass said for a deceased family member?

Thanks for your help!
Christine

Christine,

Are there any monasteries near you? Also consider asking a Catholic chaplain (local hospital, college)as they often have openings.

Do they send a card or confirmation of some sort?

No monasteries that I know of, but that's a good option. Do you have any near you to recommend ? As for the chaplain, I don't know of any either. Bummer!

God bless,
Christine

Small towns or smaller parishes. My parents live in a small rural town and can get a Mass said that week, so my aunts always call my mom and have her contact the parish there for Masses they want said more quickly than the 6 months out they would have to wait locally. Don't know if you have any options like that - some friends or family in a community like that? I could have you call my mom .

They send a card to you (or the person for whom you requested it, if they're still living and you prefer it to be sent directly). The card just says that a Mass will be offered--it does not say when.

I always use The Marian Helpers in Stockbridge, MA.
You can request cards for many different occasions to have on hand, and only send them money when the cards are used.

If you have to wait it can be of great comfort to have a Mass said on the person's birthday in years to come. Many people have done that here in our parish so that the anniversary of my son's death and his birthday are taken care of for several years. It was very kind of people to do that because I am sure I won't be thinking straight for a while.

Now that's a good idea, too. Hmmm...

Thanks so much!

Was it the church secretary that told you or someone else? It could be that the weekend masses are all booked up because everyone wants a weekend mass. But the week day masses might not be booked! You might want to check that out if you haven't already done that.

Christine,
Here is a lovely Trappist monastery that used to be local to me (I've since moved out of state and miss them!)

Holy Spirit Monastery in Conyers GA

this is the link for prayer requests or for masses.

I still order fudge and coffee from them each year.

A friend just posted about a lovely tradition her husband has regarding having masses said throughout the year for family. She includes some links to places to have masses said. Very lovely! My Husband's Christmas Tradition
