Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi There,

I'd like to purchase a child friendly nativity set for my little nephew. He is 3 yrs old and is a has high functioning autism.

I wish I would have planned this earlier, but the inspiration just came to me. I'd like one that he would enjoy for years to come without breaking the bank, if that's possible.

I'd love your ideas!

We have the Fisher Price nativity set and love it. It's almost $50 on Amazon, but I see a bunch of sets on Ebay for less.

We let our kids play with the whole set during Advent and Christmas, while the official household set has Jesus appear on Christmas day, and the wise men appear on Epiphany.

My son with Aspergers (age 12) still enjoys playing with it, so while Fisher Price might seem too babyish to some kids after a few years, your nephew will probably continue to enjoy it. (Actually, most neurotypical kids probably like it for years, if they're not too self-conscious to play with little kids' toys! )

HTH.

Oh, look--someone was talking about Playmobil nativities on the Tea & Conversation board and linked to an old thread:

play nativity thread

[Edited to add a missing word--and now, edited again to add a link to a Tales of Glory set for $25, because the link in the old thread doesn't go to it any more. I really should stay away from shopping threads!]

We also have the Fisher Price Little People set and my kids love it. They are playing with it right now, actually.

I must warn you against the Playmobil set. It has a million little pieces. I was fortunate enough to win it at Faith & Family this year, but I ahve had to separate out just the bigger pieces. We have the Fisher Price set and my kids love it too. I want to get this set for next year though. My computer is freezing up so I can't copy the link but on amazon.com it's called the Constructive Playthings Wood Nativity Set. It's beautiful.

We have the Little People one and it plays Away in a Manger when you press the top where the angel sits. Perhaps they have cheapened it and taken that feature out??

yes, I think that one costs a good bit more.. but I would be fine without something like that especially at something like half the price.

I'm going to warn against the constructive playthings nativity set. We bought this a couple of years ago. It is very cute, and it looks just like the characters in the Tomie de Paola book that comes with it, but ours quickly fell apart. Most of the pieces are pretty sturdy and all one piece, but not all, and the pieces that are not all one piece are just kind of stapled or glued together. First the wings fell off the angel. We've glued those back on several times. Then the manager piece just fell apart, the star fell off and all three pieces came apart. I'm looking to replace it now with something else.

My advice - get a really nice looking, resin Nativity that will work for both now (at 3) and as he grows. My children always use this and we like to use it as a sort of Advent calendar with different figures moving across the room and arriving, etc. I wouldn't be able to tolerate the more cartoony/childish ones but couldn't have anything I'd go crazy about the children handling it A LOT. We got one very inexpensively from Autom one year. I know the Fontanini are more expensive, but they are also resin and can be added to from year to year. I think the Autom one I got is an imitation of the Fontanini so I'm tempted to try and find a Fontanini piece on sale somewhere and see if they blend together fine.
