As I've posted here before, we are fairly new to an old Italian parish in our neighborhood where they keep up a lot of traditions I haven't seen anywhere else before. Some are just Italian and others are just traditional (as in, more common pre-VII).

So, for All Soul's Day the priests were all in black vestments. I knew that was the older tradition but I'd never seen them before. Those of you in more traditional parishes, is this color used other times as well?

We also had a blessing of a catafalque at the end of Mass (no body, just a draped stand).

And the pastor encouraged us all to do our best to attend three masses today. Apparently this was/is the tradition. I almost laughed because this parish is SO POORLY attended. But 8:30 Mass this morning had more people than we get on a typical Sunday. Does anyone else have experience going to Mass more than once on this day?

In the traditional Mass, black vestments are used for Requiem Masses, All Souls' Day, and Good Friday.

Beginning in the year 998, All souls -- the "faithful departed" -- were officially remembered in the Church's prayers on the evening of November 1, and with Requiem Masses, Masses for the dead, on November 2. All Souls Day is now a feast of the universal Church. (The word "requiem" is Latin for "rest".) Following the Second Vatican Council, all Masses celebrated on All Saints day observe that feast, not "All souls". Three Masses may still be said on All Souls Day. The first two are Masses for Burial, and the third is a Mass for the Dead. Black vestments may be worn on this day.
