Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is there a picture book that I could read on St. Lucia day that would be appropriate? I have a dd who fell in love with AG doll Kirsten Larson this year, so we are planning on adding this to our Advent celebrations this year. I need a book to anchor the food and festivities...

Thank you, Suzanne. This is exactly what I was wondering. God bless you, Jenn, for your research.

~Books,

I'm really excited about this new book, Lucia, Saint of Light by Katherine Bolger Hyde.

I really think this is it for nameday book for St. Lucia!

I can second this recommendation. This book explains not only the Swedish customs associated with this saint, but also tells the story of her life, emphasizes her virtues, and explains how she came to be such a celebrated saint in Sweden, when she was actually martyred in Sicily. It also has both the words and the music to the St. Lucia song (in English), a recipe for Lucia buns, and a list of links to various websites. The artwork is pleasant and cheerful. Definitely a perfect book for St. Lucia!

Thank you! This sounds wonderful. I've been having a hard time finding a book that talked about the saint...seems like everything else talks more about the traditions themselves.

We usually do a picture study from Carl Larson around the Feast of St. Lucia...he drew/painted traditional Swedish life and it's full of beautiful pictures. Also Elsa Beskow has some traditional St. Lucia pictures that are great.

I'm off to buy the new book JennGM recommended. It looks like a great addition to our stuff.

Hmph. Did anyone notice that Amazon says it usually ships in 3-5 weeks? That's not in time for the Feast Day this year!

Are y'all ordering from Conciliar Press and paying shipping in order to get it now???

I too noticed that on Amazon. I hesitated buying it because of that. I'm like Veruca Salt, "I want it NOW!"

Hee, I didn't know about St. Lucia until my daughter read the same American Girl book two years ago. And now Dec. 13 is forever marked as a must-celebrate day. :)

I cobbled together a wee unit study for St. Lucia Day back then.

Hope that helps!

I couldn't get the link to "Lucia" by Carl Larsson to bring up a picture, but here is one: Lucia by Carl Larsson
The unit looks lovely, Vee, thanks for sharing that!

Got my book from Conciliar Press. It's WORTH the money and the shipping! Yeah. I also got the Monk that grew prayer. Very nice.

The new Lucia book is in stock at Amazon now. I ordered yesterday afternoon and it shipped this morning. Woohoo!

Oh! Can someone tell me if Lucia is pronounced with a soft "c" as in "city" or with a "ch" sound as in "Church"?

Marcia, I *love* the Monk that Grew Prayer! Its a beautiful book. I was looking through Catholic Mosaic yesterday afternoon. I was reminded again how wonderful these books are. I think I'm going to do a FIAR style study using Catholic Mosaic starting in January with my 4 and 7 yr olds. The richness is phenomenal and it will be easy enough to add in as necessary.
