Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone read the book "Honored" by Roberta Kells Dorr? I picked it up very inexpensively (about 1/3 of retail) today and am thinking it might be a good one to share with my young girls. It is very short, large print, easy language. Luke leaves Theophilus to travel to meet Mary, to find out if what they are hearing about Christ is true.

I cannot determine if the author is Catholic or not but my guess is not. However, I didn't find anything *anti*-Catholic. Some parts, such as the description of the Annunciation, do not use the exact phrasing that a Catholic Bible would but I can't really determine if this is a difference in translation or the author's attempt to make life-like conversation. Reference is made to Saint Ann.

It is the only book of its kind I have ever come across and was just wondering, if anyone else has seen/read it, what your thoughts are about it? I always worry if there is just something my meager convert mind has "missed", kwim?

Peace of Christ,
Lara

No, I haven't seen it Lara, but I'll be very interested to hear your review of it when you are finished reading it.

Alice,

I am not a professional writer and I do not play one on TV. With that said, I will try to review this as best I know how.

The book opens with Luke (written in first person) leaving Greece and his friend Theophilus via boat. He arrives in Joppa where he is met by John and Peter, who take him to meet Mary. Cultural descriptions of clothing, food, and way of life are scattered throughout the book (albeit not always smoothly, lol).

Luke meets Mary, who is surprised that he has heard of her Son all the way in Antioch. She tells him of the Annunciation, Visitation, and her eventual marriage to Joseph. They decide to travel to Bethlehem to see the manger as Mary has not been back since her Son's birth. Before they leave Luke paints Mary's portrait and he is able to meet Lazarus' sister, Mary of Bethany.

Mary's most precious possession? The swaddling cloths she wrapped her babe in. On their trip they stop to pray at Rachel's tomb. In Bethlehem he meets one of the shepherds who came to worship the Child and hears of the hosts of angels who came to the shepherds in the fields.

I thought the book ended rather abruptly, before the party had a chance to leave Bethlehem. But Luke is eager to return so that he can write all about everything he has learned on his trip.

There are parts of the book that seem quite stilted but all in all it is the best "living" representation I have read that highlights Mary's participation.

As I said above in my previous post, *I* did not see anything blatantly anti-Catholic but there are parts that might not be "exactly" Catholic. I don't know how else to explain that, LOL.

Blessings,
Lara

LOL! You could have fooled me! Thanks for the thorough--and well written--review.
