After searching all over, I finally got professional help from JennGM and MaryM to find this great link to Mary's blog posts on a Marian Tree, here and here. Jennifer also directed me to Helen's idea for a Mary Jesse Tree. I got so excited, that now I'm wondering if anyone has combined these ideas? Maybe finding a Marian image for each character of the Jesse Tree (such as OL Queen of Peace for the story of Noah..I'm thinking about the dove here)?
We are going to our VA home for Christmas day, but I wanted some decoration here in DE as well, and I thought making the Mary Jesse Tree might be perfect. Any brilliant crafters out there have ideas to contribute?

I sort of have some ideas for a Marian craft in Jesse Tree style..but not for advent, for each day of the consecration preparation day for children (33 days) I've yet to put the time aside to really work on it but I'd like to before this year is out in preparation for a family consecration to finish on Candlemas Day next year..

We have a Mary Tree that we usually use in May - I will find a picture if I can. I use a gold ornamental tree (same one I use for our Jesse tree) - I have various Marian apparition or title pictures mounted on blue card, laminated and we hang these with blue ribbon. I think I used a spare Mary memory game cards for the pictures.

That's great! Thanks, Marilyn, any images would be helpful! I've been saving these nice, round frozen juice lids, thinking maybe we could glue/mod podge images on them and add glitter around the edges. MaryM's are so pretty, but I'm not sure I am artistic enough to do such a lovely job! Also, aussieannie, I'm looking forward to your ideas (if you get the time). What a terrific way to make the consecration preparation more real and concrete for younger children.

One of my favorite sites for resources for all things Marian is at the Marian Library at the University of Dayton. It's a treasure trove! Perhaps you'll find some other ideas in bouncing around there? Of particular interest is this page full of resources on Mary through Advent which might have something to inspire you for your Mary tree.
Random thinking out loud
I think this would be a lovely project that could be an ongoing project for a year...here are my loosely formed thoughts on it that are sort of forming plans...
I was inspired by MaryM's Mary tree when I saw it for the Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia. We have a small gold tree that we used to use for our Jesse Tree that I've set aside for the Mary tree. I have set aside a set of Marian Apparition cards, but I also have started collecting some holy cards of great works of Our Lady to be part of a Sacred Art unit that would be focused on Our Lady using some of the resources and information here. I'm still in the collecting ideas phase.
I think this would make a beautiful Marian centerpiece for Mondays With Mary. Each Monday you could read about another apparition or image of Our Lady, preferably pertaining to one falling near that time of the liturgical year, work on the art project/image/ornament for the Mary tree throughout the week, hang it on Friday and have it set out for your teatime on Friday...or the next Monday.
I know you were asking about Advent specifically though, but maybe there's a way to adapt an idea here for that. I love the imagery of Our Lady of Hope waiting through Advent for her Son. Our Jesse Tree is a little different in that ours progresses linearly. I like the imagery of how long the people of Israel waited for their Savior, and because I love the image of Our Lady waiting hopefully throughout Advent, we keep a tiny statue of her (which is actually a small wooden figure of Our Lady from another Nativity set) for placing next to each symbol of the Jesse tree. She moves next to each symbol each day until she finally reaches the creche of Our Little Lord. The children love moving her through the symbols on the Jesse Tree, and I think it really punctuates that this is a season of great hope! I was wondering if I could do something with that - including a symbol of Our Lady to accompany her? I don't know...still thinking...
Just thoughts really...I don't have anything concrete yet, so I'm anxious to hear what you come up with, Caroline. This project has so much potential!

Those are similar ideas I had, Jennifer.
For a Mary Tree in Advent, I would look at the Old Testament with Mary. I had a few ideas from some of the books I have, but also saw that the Mary page's Advent Calendar has OT Types of Mary.
A tree could be a year-long project, something special for each feast, perhaps in May covering the Shrines of Mary, like KathrynUK did, and October covering the titles of the Litany of Mary (like Meredith used).
Or a month could cover the feasts on the General Roman Calendar and her presence in the Litugy.

Now I'm thinking there's really two opportunities here that could dovetail:
1. A year-long study of Our Lady, her titles and apparitions, based on the liturgical year (incorporating Mondays with Mary and also more of Mary's titles and appearances around the world), making an ornament for each title/apparition. You could do this in a month, but for us that would be really a crunch. To use the ornaments in (2) below, we would need about 30 different ornaments; I would prefer to do them once a week with some "margin" built in for weeks we didn't quite make it that far!
2. Use a selection of the same ornaments to represent Mary in the stories of the Old Testament, linking them to the traditional Jesse Tree characters, maybe hanging up one OT figure and one Marian ornament each day. I think it would be fantastic for the children to see the Mother they have come to love throughout the year "hidden" in the OT this way.
I really like this idea, but it sure isn't going to be useful for this Advent. However, we could begin with the new liturgical year and make our ornaments with an eye on doing the Jesse tree idea next year.
Now, I need to sit down and organize the titles, apparitions, and OT stories in a way that makes sense! Fortunately, Meredith has already done a lot of the work!

My dds and I talked about doing something like this last year and decided that this year would be better after the baby was a little older...thank you for reminding me!
There are some wonderful ideas here!
we thought of doing one of Our Lady's litanies and maybe using Shrinky Dink plastic..but since the budget is cut very thin this year we might just do it with some other material and as they would be completed, hanging them on the Christmas tree as advent progresses.
We start off the Advent season stringing on white and purple lights on the tree and lighting the purple ones during advent and just the white ones for the Christmas season. We also use purple ribbons that are changed to dark red and gold for Christmas...but we also wanted to use the tree to Make ornaments that point towards the season of Christmas and thought the litany idea was different from the Jesse tree idea we had last year. ..and I just LOVE symbolism!...
(We also thought we would eventually do this for the names of Jesus..like Rod of Jesse, I am the Vine...etc...We thought about doing that along a long grapevine swag that we could hang between the living room and dining room....but! I digress!)
Now that I have some older folks here, I can't wait to show them this thread and see what they would like to do. I just LOVE projects like these!
