Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Moms~

We have a homeschool group this Friday. The moms decided to use the Simon Peter School "A to Z" Memory Verses. We divided the class into two age groups: those that are second grade and above and first grade and below.

I am teaching the first grade and below...and I am losing my mind trying to think of what I am going to do! I am probably going to have about 40 students (who are all hopefully going to be accompanied by mom!) So...size is an issue here...as is the fact that I do not think we have access to going outside (we are at the library, and I don't think there is much running room at all behind the library)...I so rely on outdoor games for things like this.

With that being said, I am trying to follow the A to Z curriculum, but it is definitely geared for 7+...so there is only so much I can do.

Our verse is regarding Obedience and Children Obeying their Parents...

What games and activities do you suggest? I can only think of "Simon Says," and "Red Light, Green Light"...and the Donut Man Song "O-B-E-Y"...

I am very nervous about this...I fear some moms may be disappointed that my lesson may be "too easy" for their 6-7 year olds, while at the same time, not including the 3-4 yos enough. AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

I am a new home schooling mom and was definitely duped/cajoled/encouraged (whatever word you choose):) into teaching the VERY FIRST LESSON, which I really did not want to do...and really should know my limits better...hard lesson to learn right now. I only have a 4yo and 2yo...so home schooling is so new to me...and I am doing this lesson in front of veteran moms, which really adds to my reeling mind.

Any help out there? I am panicking...

God Bless,
Maggie

Oh, Maggie, I feel your anxiety. It's very hard to be put in a position where you are teaching in areas you haven't yet reached with your own children. And that age span is very hard - they really are at different abilities and attention spans. But I commend you for stepping up to this commitment. As someone who used to coordinate our local co-op, I know how hard it is to find parents willing to really say yes to teaching a class or lesson. No parents had better complain - they really should be thankful you are willing to do it.

As to the specifics mentioned, I find that 1st graders still do enjoy Simon Says and Red-light Green-light games, so I don't think you should concern yourself there. I'll have to think a bit for other suggestions.

Is there anyway you can get someone else to help you and split the group in two? One thought for a "quiet" activity is directed drawing. Each child has a piece of paper, and you should have a large white board or sheet of paper they can see. Direct them to draw simple shapes and lines to make a picture, like an animal (big oval (body), little circle (head), two rectangles (legs), then details like triangles for ears, lines for a mane, or whatever the animal has). If they obey you and follow directions, they should get the correct animal. Also, could you read a Bible story (Noah? Abraham leaving Ur?) or picture book about obedience? You could also spend some time working on memorizing the verse, maybe make up a tune for it and teach them that? I'll say a prayer for you.
