Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is the,"Bless us oh Lord..." prayer the norm for Catholic families and functions or are other prayers acceptable. I found a prayer for mealtime that you sing to Edelweiss and was going to teach it to my dd but not if we should stick to the above prayer.
Thanks

I really think that any prayer is fine, as long as we mean it. We used to sing an Edelweiss meal prayer at our parish's monthly soup and bread supper. I really liked it.

For ages I felt "guilty" because we say "Bless us O Lord and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy Bounty. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Through Christ our Lord, Amen." I just knew we would never get to say a prayer before and after meals, and wanted to pray for the poor souls at each meal, so we combined and I felt really bad. Then we ate meals with a several other Catholic families and realised how differently everyone did things (and oddly in my opinion at times ) and so I stopped feeling guilty. I think a sung grace can be lovely - we used to sing a latin grace at university and it was wonderful.
