My son Andrew had an appointment this morning up at Children's specialty clinic (he has some developmental delays). So while we were in town I told my husband that I've always wanted to visit the Cathedral of St. Paul and we did!
It was absolutely amazing. Beautiful and breathtaking. They do tours but we had to leave before the tour. I would love to go back sometime and and take the tour and learn more about the Cathedral.

It was so last minute Paula. We had Andrew's appointment and then Scott needed to drive by some place where he is delivering a load tomorrow (he's a truck driver) and I mentioned it and we were so close.
I am still speechless. Have you ever taken the tour Paula? I'd love to meet you there sometime to take the tour.

We attended Mass there regularly while we lived there - isn't it JUST BEAUTIFUL???
The echo during Mass is great for everything except the homily (but don't tell the bishop that!). Whenever he said Mass there, he made a point to welcome the children and all their noise - stating that the parents are on their way to sainthood just getting the children there (relatively) on time, so don't worry about keeping them quiet! - so if you ever make it for Mass with loud little ones, you've pretty well been personally invited by the bishop!

OH, I miss that cathedral so much. My hubby and I spent our newlywed years in St. Paul and my 2 oldest were born there. We used to spend so much time near and about there.
But I must say the most impressive thing to experience there is the Ordination of new priests. When I was 9 1/2 months pregnant with our oldest, a dear friend got ordained for the diocese and everyone thought I was crazy to go but I wanted to see that beautiful Mass. What a Mass and what a blessing. Arch-Bishop Flynn stopped and blessed my belly and said, "thank you for coming" I smiled and said I would not have missed it

I think it is really neat that it is the Catherdral of St. Paul since it is still the year of St. Paul (even though the Year for Priests has started, too). Praying for many blessings for you, Theresa, through the intercession of St. Paul.
Oh, and have you all seen this Lego replica of the Cathedral of St. Paul? Very cool

Last week the Vatican announced The Cathedral as the first National Shrine to St. Paul! We were there a few weeks ago and see a partial LEGO replica - someone had destroyed the middle section.

There is a fantastic book about the Cathedral and the art and symbols of the Cathedral. The photos are stunning and I often take the book to the Cathedral and sit and read it and look for the art (I live a few minutes down the street from the Cathedral). I highly recommend the book! The name of the book is Stone and Glass: The Meaning of the Cathedral of Saint Paul by Dia Boyle.
A wonderful new Catholic book and gift shop also opened down the street from the Cathedral at Selby Street and Dale Avenue. It is a family owned business and one of the spouses is almost always there. The name of the shop is Living Bread.
If you ever have the opportunity while in Minneapolis, I highly recommend a trip to the Basilica of St. Mary. It is spectacular! According to their website - it is the first Basilica in the United States.
Theresa, I hope your sons appointment went well.

The Cathedral is our parish! We love it and I will really miss it when we move away from Minnesota next week. I also highly recommend the book if you are local--we know the author and it is beautiful. Families really are so welcome. The old bishop is the one who used to always mention it from the pulpit but the current rector and staff are extremely welcome of children as well. We were fortunate to be able to go to oridnations this spring as well--nothing like it for fostering vocations, I think!

We may be visiting the area this summer (relatives slightly south of Minneapolis), and I was trying to find something to do one day. Now I want to go visit the Cathedral!
If anyone has suggestions, please feel free to pm me? The only thing on our list for sure is the American Girl store and the Land's End outlet one day!

we just got back from our trip to St. Paul and attended 7pm Sat evening Mass there, the eve of the closing of the year of St paul! wow. it was absolutely breath taking. We loved the guide choir which processed in, and around the aisles singing, and then stood right behind us (about 1/2 way back) and sang some more! before going up to the choir loft. the Bishop gave a fantastic homily. it was hard to hear the lectors, but the Bishop could really project well, and even sang!
Summit Ave. is so amazing. We saw no fewer than 6 wedding receptions on our way to mass!
Sorry to the Twin city moms that I never contacted you. We really were at the mercy of dh's schedule, and could not plan to do anything until literally about 30 min or less ahead of time!
We were able to get to Como, the Minn Zoo, Science Center, Fr Snelling, a library on University, and mall of America and IKEA twice! Oh we even hit the controversial Grand Opening of Trader Joe's near where we were staying- Lexington and I 35. We loved the tree lined streets!
everyone drove so slow, it was not intimidating for me to drive around at all, compared to Chicago!
sorry for the hijack! I really wish we had had time to go on the Shrine of St Paul tour!

Lisa I was about to shoot you a pm for not giving us a chance to meet you but I do understand about the schedule thing.
Every time our Bishop preaches he sings--he sang to the ordinands this year, too. We like him ;)

I am so sad that I didn't get a chance to meet people. I really felt pretty overwhelmed with being the "driver" for dh (St Thomas University) and the struggle with wanting to see/do lots of cool things!
Dh is super bummed that he saw absolutely nothing except beautiful Summit Ave and the Shrine/Cathedral.
and us, of course ;).
I do want to encourage folks to get to the Shrine. It is such a gift. and what a family friendly place to visit!
