Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just wanted to quickly share a resource I've had for years but when I mention it to other h/s moms, they have never heard of Catechism in Stories. They were complied by Father Lovasik and originally published in 1956 by the Bruce Publishing Co. They have since been republished and are sold by Father's elderly brother out of Pennsylvania.

The stories are all very short and are divided by subject the Creed, the Commandments, and the Sacraments & Prayer. Father wrote a little application for each story and how it applies to the Baltimore Catechism question. This is an example:

                  "The Cross and the Host"

A father gave a beautiful crucifix to his little daughter and said to her, " Now tell me, Helen, what is the difference between the figure of Jesus on this crucifix, and the Host which the priest holds up at the Consecration of the Mass?"

Little Helen did not hesitate a moment.

"When I look at the figure on the cross," she said, "I see Jesus, and He is not there. When I look at the Host, I do not see Jesus but He is there."

Application:
Holy Mass is a true Sacrifice-the Sacrifice of Calvary offered again, no more in a bloody manner, but in an unbloody manner under the appearance of bread and wine. After the Consecration, Jesus becomes present on the altar as the Victim of Calvary, and through the hands of the priest offers Himself again to His Father with all the love and adoration which He once offered to Him on the Cross. Helen's answer was correct. Jesus is not really on the crucifix she received from her father, but Jesus is really in the Host she sees in the hands of the priest at Mass, because He becomes present as the Victim of Calvary through the words of the priest at the Consecration.

Question 162 Mass and Calvary-different

Most of the stories are short and sweet. My children love them. Father's brother also offers them on audio tapes and I believe the voice of the narrator is Father Lovasik himself.

I will mention that he includes many stories of martyrdom. My boys especially love the many examples he gives from the experiences of chaplains in the military. Anyway, just wanted to pass the info on. They're great for First Communion prep!

We have these and love them, too.
Thanks for the reminder to get them out and start using them again

God bless,

Oh, and for the slightly older crowd, Anecdotes and Examples for the Catechism by Rev. Frances Spirago is very similar. I really got a lot out of these stories. It's published by Roman Catholic Books, but you can also see the entire book online free at Anecdotes and Examples for the Catechism in Google Books.

God bless,
Christine

We have these! I have enjoyed them myself and with older visiting children (my son is not yet ready for them). I think we got them through Our Lady of Victory but I don't remember exactly.

Very beautiful stories!

Thanks, Maddie, for the tip!

I found them online here at a site dedicated to his works. Very reasonably priced, too.
