Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a child who will be 7 1/2 by spring 2010. Because of her birthdate, she will technically be a 1st grader, which is a year before our parish does First Confession/FHC, but our parish allows parental discretion. I think she could benefit from both confession and FHC. Let's just say I think she is aware of the choice to sin.

I do all the preparing for my kid's sacraments and then they have to pass written tests/priest interviews at our parish. We live far from our parish so CCD is difficult for us.

Even though she is ahead of the curve in some ways, I am not sure she will completely understand the preparation I normally use. Last time I used Elizabeth's FHC notebook ideas along with CHC's prep (without F and L), bible stories, Catholic Mosaic, and some use of the First Communion Catechism. I aim for understanding and paraphrasing of the basic ideas, not for memorization, for the mostpart.

I am really just not sure whether I should begin to prepare her this fall or not. I guess my question is, how much does she need to understand in order to begin confession and receive FHC? Are there guidelines for determining readiness?

I was born and raised in Germany and came to this country in my late twenties. In Germany, most children don't have their First Confession and First Holy Communion until third grade (age 9). The reason behind this is the readiness for First Confession. Children under the age of nine don't seem to grasp the seriousness of sin in a more intellectual way. I do like this age and wait until my children turn nine before they receive those two sacraments.

I heard a very wise priest once tell a group of homeschooling moms this:

" I want you to gage your child's readiness for their FHC on their readiness for their First Reconciliation. See, any well trained, well formed 4 or 5 year old knows that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist but that same child needs a few years to develop their conscience.""

That being said, my oldest received her FHC 3 months before her 8th birthday and was definitely ready for her first confession:)

Good Luck making the decision!

I ran out of posting time last night, but have been musing on your thoughts. My old diocese used to do First Rec. in the 2nd and FHC in the 3rd. Seems like everyone has a different idea of what is the best time. Now I'm starting to get confused...

Things are different fromm Diocese to diocese I guess. FHC and Reconcilliatiion and Confirmation are done in 2nd grade here.
