Christianity Today
I can't get this to link. There is an article in Christianity Today called "Speak the Gospel" in reference to Francis of Assisi's quote "Preach the gospel at all times; when necessary, use words."
Edited to add:
Here is another article along the same lines.
Preach the Gospel
I have a friend that has quoted this to me for years. I am finding it interesting that according to these articles Assisi didn't even say this.

The reason the link is broken is that you have inadvertently added an extra space between "120-42." and the following "0." Remove that space and it works! But I'm too tired to read the article tonight, so it's off to bed for me . Looked interesting, though!

Curiosity is a terrible thing. Couldn't go to bed until I found another source for this info, since I had in fact heard before that St. Francis did not actually say this. Check out this link, which references an article in St. Anthony Messenger (the magazine of the Franciscans).

Well, I'm glad I looked at this. I hadn't heard this quote until my retreat last weekend and was actually using it for my speech.
Funny how both articles took it so differently than what I thought the quote meant. Our example and deeds speak more loudly than words, particularly in our children.
While the quote might not be from St. Francis, it follows along his way of thinking. It's in the Little Flowers of St. Francis where he tells his brothers that they are going to preach in a town, and walk the whole way without saying a word.

This morning's Office of Readings (Wednesday, Ninth Week of Ordinary Time, not the reading under Charles Lwanga) had some words by St. Gregory the Great that elaborate on this same point:
"For true doctrine tries both to teach by words and to demonstrate by living example-humility, which is the mother and mistress of virtues. Its goal is to express humility among the disciples of truth more by deeds than by words...Peter enjoins: "Be always prepared to satisfy everybody who asks a reason for the hope which is in you; and by adding the words, with a good conscience, speak gently and respectfully, Preter draws attention to the manner in which sacred doctrine should be taught. When he tells his disciples: These things command and teach with all power, Paul really recommends the credibility that goes hand in hand with good behavior rather than the domineering exercise of power. When one practices first and preaches afterwards, one is really teaching with power...Of the Lord, too, it is said: He taught with authority unlike the Scribes and the Pharisees. He alone in a unique and sovereign way spoke from the power of his goodness because no evil weakness led him into sin."
The main point is that speaking the Gospel and living the Gospel must go together. We cannot actually spread the Gospel without speaking at all, because there are in fact details that new believers must know...the life, death, and Resurrection of our Lord; the descent of the Holy Spirit; the truth and efficacy of the sacraments. But if our witness is only with words, it is dead. Just like faith and works, so speech and testimony of life must act together. (Which now that I'm thinking of it, is a great argument for the necessity of works with faith. I mean, who would say that preaching the Gospel (faith) without living it (works), is the Lord's plan???
No one would ever have been converted!!)
